Bluebird Canyon may get sculptures

Reversing its earlier decision, the Arts Commission recommended Monday that a pair of sculptures by Vincent Magni donated by the Lew Geiser Trust be placed at the corner of Bluebird Canyon and Oriole Drive, on land owned by the city.

And in a surprise twist, the commission also recommended that the two works be selected from two different sets of Magni works instead of purchasing one set “off the shelf” from the Paris gallery that sells his work.

The work would commemorate the Bluebird Canyon landslide as well as honor longtime canyon resident Geiser, who died April 1 in his landslide-damaged home.

The donation was previously denied by the commission, whose members said the sculptures would not last in the city’s climate, but the City Council overruled the decision.
