NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL WRAP-UP
Here are a few items the council considered Tuesday.
SIGN PROGRAM
After at least four years and several studies and experiments with directional signs to point out city areas and landmarks, the council finally approved a program to install blue signs with white lettering at seven city entrances and 13 specific locations, and 71 directional signs.
The signs will be paid for and installed in two phases, with $225,000 budgeted this year. Costs begin at $900 for pole signs and go as high as $14,000 for free-standing monument signs.
WHAT IT MEANS
New, easy-to-read directional signs will begin to appear in about 91 locations around the city.
TRAFFIC CALMING
The council adopted a set of citywide guidelines for neighborhood traffic management. It’s the first time there have been universal criteria to evaluate requests for traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps and traffic circles.
Under the new rules, at least five residents must sign a petition asking for traffic calming in their neighborhood, and once a particular measure is selected, 70% of nearby residents and businesses must support it before the city would go forward.
WHAT IT MEANS
Residents concerned about speeding traffic can ask for traffic calming in their neighborhoods, and city officials now have a methodical way to judge the requests.
