NEWPORT-MESA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD MEETING PREVIEW

Here are some items the board will consider tonight:
CORONA DEL MAR HIGH SCHOOL POOLIn July, the CDM Community Aquatics Facilities Foundation, a local nonprofit organization, approached the school board asking for help in renovating the Marian Bergeson Aquatic Center at Corona del Mar High School. The pool complex, named after the former state senator, has deteriorated since its inception 16 years ago.
The foundation asked the Newport-Mesa board to allot $250,000 to renovate the pool this year, rather than next year. If the trustees agree to do so, the district will have to transfer funds from the capital reserve to the general fund, then repay the funds during the 2007-08 school year.
The city of Newport Beach has already pledged $290,000 in matching funds for the current year’s budget. Newport-Mesa’s contribution would go toward replastering the pool and making other technical improvements.
WHAT TO EXPECT
School board president David Brooks said that borrowing funds from the capital reserve was rare, but that the board would examine each case individually.
“We usually don’t do things like that for regular maintenance items,” he said. “However, they’ve made a good case. We’ll just have to see what happens.”
DRAINAGE EASEMENTThe Boys & Girls Club located near Kaiser Elementary School is planning to build an outdoor sports court on city-owned property, and the city of Costa Mesa is requesting a drainage easement from the district because the property drains onto the Kaiser campus. The city has already done a hydrology study on the district grounds and reported that the impact from water runoff would be minimal.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Some discussion, but it appears likely to pass.
APPOINTMENTSThe district will announce the appointment of 73 new employees, including Charles Hinman as assistant superintendent of secondary education and Elizabeth Novak as assistant superintendent of human resources.
