Ex-Sailor adds title

CHICAGO ? Newport Harbor High product Misty May-Treanor and teammate Kerri Walsh won for the eighth time in 10 AVP beach tournaments this year by claiming the crown at the Chicago Open on Sunday.
May-Treanor and Walsh defeated Rachel Wacholder and Elaine Youngs, products of Laguna Beach High and El Toro High, respectively, 21-14, 21-15, in the final.
The win pushed Walsh over the $1 million mark in career earnings. Walsh has now won $1,001,908.
May-Treanor, who surpassed the $1 million earlier this season, has now won $1,096,858. May-Treanor and Walsh have split 253,800 in prize money this season.
Costa Mesa resident Mike Lambert teamed with Stein Metzger to win the men’s title in Chicago.
Lambert and Metzger, the No. 1 seed, defeated No. 2-seeded Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser, 21-16, 21-18, in the final.
Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and partner Sean Rosenthal lost to Rogers and Dalhausser in the semifinals to share third place.
Matt Fuerbringer, a former Estancia High basketball star, shared fifth place along with partner Casey Jennings.
April Ross, another Newport Harbor High product, teamed with Keao Burdine to share 17th place in the women’s event.
The AVP tour resumes for the Manhattan Beach Open, Aug. 10-13, though May-Treanor and Walsh are listed among the entires for a Federation Internationale de Volleyball event in Paris, France, Tuesday through Saturday.
