Laguna contends for titles

Laguna Beach High athletes gave outstanding performances Tuesday at the Pacific Coast League Track & Field Prelims and advanced to compete in today’s league finals at Irvine High.

Justin Rovin improved his school record in the 300 hurdles to 38.6 ? good for the seventh-fastest time in the state this year.

In the boys’ 200, four of the eight qualifiers for today’s finals hail from Laguna: Behrang Ziaeian, Jonathon Martinez, EJ Gomez and Michael Austin.

The Breakers also qualified two members of its squad in the finals of the boys’ 100 and 110 and 300 hurdles, and three in the 400, 1,600 and 3,200. In addition, Laguna recorded the top-seed times in both boys’ relays, the 4 by 100 and 4 by 400.

Brittany Clark dominated both the girls’ 100 and 200 races, and will be joined by several of her Breakers’ teammates in today’s finals.

“The plan for Friday’s league finals is to score as many points in the running events as possible so that we can offset Northwood’s dominating field events team,” Laguna boys’ coach Dave Brobeck said. “No one wins at prelims, but we advanced all of the right kids into the finals without any hiccups.

“Hopefully, Friday will be a day of great memories for our program.”
