SCHRAEDER SECURES FUTURE

Ross Schraeder, who ended his UC Irvine men’s basketball career last month as the school’s all-time leader in three-pointers (233), has signed a multi-year contract with Bipop Reggio Emilia of the Italian professional league, the school announced Saturday.

The contract reportedly runs through 2009.

Schraeder, who averaged a team-best 13.1 points per game for the Anteaters and whose 47.4% shooting from three-point range ranked fourth in the nation, signed after a three-day tryout.

BRAINS AND BRAWN

Two Vanguard University women’s basketball players have been chosen as Golden State Athletic Conference scholar-athletes.

Tiari Goold, a junior business major, and Kelly Schmidt, a junior liberal studies major, were among 18 women’s basketball players selected by the conference for their academic achievements. Schmidt was also the conference’s Player of the Year, and Goold was an all-conference selection in women’s basketball.

THORNTON ASSIST LEADER

UC Irvine junior setter Brian Thornton, who has helped the Anteaters earn the No. 1 ranking in men’s volleyball, entered the week leading the nation with 13.9 assists per game.

Freshman libero Brent Asuka entered the week leading the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with 3.5 digs per game.

BREAKING NEW GROUND

A ceremony marking the beginning of construction on a new clubhouse at UC Irvine’s Anteater Ballpark is scheduled for April 18 at 5 p.m. The groundbreaking will precede the Anteaters’ home game against USC.

The two-story, 6,500-square-foot venue will house the coaches’ offices, team locker and equipment rooms and training facilities. It is scheduled to be finished in the fall.

The new clubhouse is being funded by private donations and is the first modification to Anteater Ballpark since its opening in 2002.

UCI BASEBALL CLINIC

The UC Irvine baseball team will hold a skills clinic for the Challenger Little League on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Anteater Ballpark.

Up to 60 disabled youth will be invited to participate in a series of drills, including hitting, pitching, throwing and catching.

The Challenger Little Leaguers are also invited to share a pizza dinner with the coaches and players afterward.
