Vanguard gets minor scare, but survives to stay unbeaten

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The Vanguard University women’s basketball team shook off a slow start and pulled away for a 73-64 win over the College of Saint Mary (Neb.) at the Cruzin’ Classic.
The Lions, ranked No. 1 in NAIA Division I, faced their first major challenge of the season. College of Saint Mary, which received votes in the most recent NAIA Division II rankings, led by as many as five points in the first half before the Lions rallied.
Vanguard (6-0) took the lead for good on Lindsey Wood’s three-pointer with eight minutes left before halftime, her only points of the game.
The Lions led the entire second half, but could not extend the margin past 10 points.
Jessica Richter scored 25 points and added five rebounds and five steals for the Lions. Rachel Besse added 19 points, seven rebounds and three blocks, and Kelly Schmidt chipped in with 12 points.
Chelsea Malone led Saint Mary (8-4) with 18 points.
The Lions will meet Waldorf College (Iowa) today in their finale in the tournament.
