Newport Mesa Seahawks 40, South Gate Rams 0: The Seahawks offense dominated the first quarter by giving the ball to tailback Drew Diller, who ran though gaping holes created by a dominant offensive line, resulting in two touchdowns.

Quarterback Austin Rios connected on two long passes to receivers Sam Barkely and Mitch Gardner to keep the Ram defense on their heels . Running back Jeff Condino took over in the second quarter to continue the offensive assault on the Rams, scoring from 30 yards out. The score opened up a 32-point halftime lead.

The Seahawks offense put an exclamation point on the victory in the second half when tailback Blair Luchs carried the ball six consecutive times, with his last touch resulting in a 5-yard touchdown run.

On defense, the Seahawks punished the Rams, holding them to three first downs. Colby Gilly, David Detrick, Preston Risser and AJ Swies all had multiple tackle games. Defensive backs Parker Eddy, Matt Carlyle, Barkley and Gardner made sure the Ram passing attack was a non-threat.

Defensive and offensive linemen Louis Sheldon, Trevor Lawrence, Trent Anderson, Dakota Gilbert, John Prickett, Vince Aqueveque, Mario Rosales, Tory Morgan, Adam Kinder, Aaron White, AJ Swies, Zack Beaudin and David Detrick dominated the game and set the tone and tempo for the one-sided victory.

The Seahawks advance to the Conference semifinals this weekend versus the Carson Colts at Compton High School.

The Costa Mesa Mustangs were honored Saturday, winning the Warren Ferguson Sportsmanship Award for the Orange Empire Conference in 2005. The award is determined by reports submitted by game officials after each game. The Costa Mesa Mustangs are coached by Coach Gary Baume, assistants Dan Baume, Sean Baume, Steve Baume, Darrel DeVines, Danmiel Forrer, Steve Mowyer, John Woods and player administrator Ed Baume.

Mustangs players include: tailback Derek Amendola, quarterback Malik Shakur, fullback Jeff Hamilton, split end Jordan Forrer and tight end Kristen Woods. The offensive line includes Mitchell Grandia, Bryan Guzman, Robbie Huard, Abner Jimenaz, Eric Travis and Jon Hanson. The defense was headed up by free safety Richie Lowery, cornerback Logan Mowery, defensive linemen Carlos Vazquez, Nick Guzowski, Tyler Biggs, Caden Stark and Kambrin Huynh, and linebackers Nick Blucker and Ekolu Ledbetter.

DIOCESE OF ORANGE

The Our Lady Queen of Angels School’s 5th and 6th grade flag football team finished its season undefeated at 10-0.

Members of the team include: Edward Deeb, Kevin Wiggins, Dominic Cattaneo, Tim Kelly, Chris Nealey, Mike Madigan, Scott Matthews, Will Ferrero, Walter Frome, Niki Luna, Colby Watson, Hunter Heckendorn, Chris Von Der Ahe, Ryan Griffen, Alex Matar, Teddy Barry, Dylan Gronendyke, Eric Zamucen and Max Schafnitz.

NEWPORT BEACH BAT RAYS 12s

The Newport Beach Bat Rays won the United States Special Sports Assn. Baseball 2005 Holiday Classic last weekend at Mile Square Park

The Bat Rays defeated the O.C. Storm in the championship game, 6-0. Cort Hastings pitched a shutout, giving up only two hits. Ryan Banning, Connor Gaal, Grant Garrett and Brandon Zelner all had RBI singles in the win.

In the semifinal game Sunday afternoon, Tommy Shaw outdueled the opposing pitcher in a 1-0 victory. Shaw pitched a no-hitter. Zach Murtaugh had the sole RBI for Newport, while Andrew McCormack had the only other hit off the Peninsula Blue Waves pitcher. In the fourth inning, a hard-hit Blue Waves ball deflected off Shaw’s glove to Hastings. The shortstop made a throw home to Grant Garrett, who blocked the plate and made the tag, saving a run.

Also key to the Bat Rays championship were Tommy Bubonic, Gianni Ferrante, Michael Keasey, Billy Macdonald, Brett Thompson and Casey Worden.

PONY LEAGUE

Newport Harbor Mustang Red finished their regular season undefeated. The team consists of Blake Bauer, Brandt Bucher, Paddy Conroy, Braden Delannoy, Quinci Holgate, Robert Lyons, Jason Rodriguez, Connor Seabold, Bryan Shollin, Shaun Vetrovec and Austin Yule.

BOYS UNDER 10

Corona del Mar , won the Southern California championship. In the semifinals, the boys defeated Commerce, 15-1. Corona del Mar beat Laguna, 9-5, in the finals. Members of the team include: Keenan Chung-Wolf, Cameron Hook, Logan Piper, Jack Ortlieb, Jake Favreau, , Brenden Fisher, James Walters, Jack Harryman, Colby Watson and Ali McCormick.

GIRLS UNDER 8

Tigers vs. Blue Bombers: Alyssa Anderson and Mackenzie Morsey both scored goals, with help on offense from Tia DiGiovanni and Abigail Klein. The defensive efforts of Madeleine Francis, Makena Martin and Lauren Kobayashi helped goalkeeper Paige Nelson keep the Bombers from scoring.

GIRLS UNDER 6

Peach Puppies vs. Red Lava Girls: Sabrina DiGiovanni, Kelly Kobayashi, Caroline Taketa and Sophie Habibion each scored for the Puppies. Rachel Davis and Kendall Fryer made great plays to get the ball up field. Defensive plays by Stephanie Beder gave the Red Lava Girls trouble all day.

GIRLS UNDER 12

Bad News Butterflies 1, Queen Bees 1 (Butterflies win shootout, 4-3): Sara Hamilton, Karli Leal, Nicole Perrier, and Katie Ayala scored goals in a shootout for the Butterflies. Maddie Grant scored the only goal in regulation after a pass from Perrier.

Ayala, Page Keys and Kelly Torres all had great offensive games for the Butterflies. Jamie Darling, Sara Hamilton, Kelsey Pearson and Maddie Erdossy shined on defense.

Bad News Butterflies 1, Blue Charges 1 (Butterflies win shootout, 3-2):

Kendall Walker, Tayler Morgan, Megan Farley, Kelsey Pearson and Kelly Torres all had stellar games on defense.

Jamie Darling, Sara Hamilton and Maddie Erdossy helped the defense with big kicks to keep the ball out of the defensive territory. Goalkeeper Katie Gaitan stopped eight shots on goal in the first half, and Karli Leal stopped numerous attempts at the goal in the second half.

Perrier had an assist to Karli Leal for the Butterfllies’ only regulation goal.

Page Keys, Katie Ayala and Maddie Grant paced the offense with their hustle. Taylor Morgan and Christina Lugo sewed up the sidelines and kept the ball in play.

BOYS UNDER 12

Zesty Mustards 1, Red Bulls 1 (Mustards win shootout, 3-0) Ryan Schroth scored an early goal and it looked like enough until the Red Bulls slipped a goal past the defense. The game was well played and was tied after two overtimes, resulting in a penalty kick shootout. In the shootout, Arturo Navarro, Ryan Cerrato and Ryan Schroth all made their penalty kicks. Goalkeeper Teddy Barry kept the opposition scoreless in the shootout.

Zesty Mustards 1, Killers 0:Goalkeepers Teddy Barry and Tyler Machado did their best to help preserve the shutout and help the Mustards win the championship for Region 97. Arturo Navarro scored an early goal after an assist from Kevin Rakestraw. The Mustards thwarted many opportunities with the exceptional defense of Max Phillips, Ryan Cerrato, Tynan Yanaga, Hollin Alhart and Ryan Schroth. Kyle Regan, Kyle Singer and Ayrton Logan gave the Mustards numerous goal-scoring chances. Kevin Oswalt, Izaak Lofgren and Eusebio Mendoza played their best game of the year in the final.

GIRLS UNDER 10

Purple People Eaters 5, The Crazy Eights 2: It was a hard fought game with both teams putting in an excellent effort. With goals by Kathryn De La Torre, Mallory Gyulay, Molly Manser and Makayla Swies, the Purple People Eaters were able to run up five goals. Great defense by Jaclyn Manderson, Shoshawna McKinney and goalie Gabriella Mangano kept the Crazy Eights out of the goal most of the game.

The Crazy Eights suffered their only loss of the season. For the Eights, goals were scored by Mackenzie Gaddis and Analysa Vivanco.

Army Girls 1, Cotton Candy Crew 0: In a game that saw no losers, only winners, it took 4 full quarters, two overtimes and finally a shootout to determine who advanced. The Cotton Candy Crew (“CC Crew”) were bested by the Army Girls in an epic match.

The Army Girls came in undefeated, sporting only one tie to blemish their perfect record, while the “CC Crew” had clawed their way to the final round, winning in the last minute of the pool play tourney.

From the beginning, the “CC Crew” defense of Erin Barth, Libby Knight and Evelyn Stephans showed great resolve.

Half backs Cassidy Davis, Nadine Lefler, Natalie Ward and Kenya Avila had numerous shots, only to be denied. Rachel DiGiambattista marked the Army Girls’ star player all day, holding her to no goals an only one shot. KK Wynn’s return showed great results, as she played her best game of the year. “CC Crew” goalkeeper Taylor Kalatschan recorded her 10th straight shutout quarter of the tournament.

Crazy Eights 1, Cotton Candy Crew 0: The Crazy Eights defense held tough to keep the Cotton Candy Crew scoreless. In a well-fought game, the Eights edged the Crew with a penalty kick delivered by Analysa Vivanco. The defense of Brooke Meer, Kellie Melendres, Jenna Jarvis, Julia Frei, Alex Vasquez -- and a goalkeeper save by Jessica Ochoa -- stayed strong and delivered a shutout. Analysa Vivanco, Mackenzie Gaddis, and Reo Nathan delivered many shots on goal. MDefense by Rachel Whitelegge and Riley Rickman contributed to the win.

The Crazy Eights and “CC Crew” had both given their all in the morning games and, under a blazing November sun, played their hearts out in the last game. Defensively, Nadine Lefler, Libby Knight and Evelyn Stephans held of the Crazy Eights the whole game until, with two minutes to play, a hand ball in the box and a penalty kick proved to be the margin of victory. Rachel DiGiambattista, Cassidy Davis, Natalie Ward and Kenya Avila had numerous shots. KK Wynn’s valiant effort held one of the best players in the league to no goals and only two shots. “CC Crew” goalkeeper Taylor Kalatschan recorded her 13th straight shutout quarter of the tournament till faced with the impossible task of stopping the penalty kick.

Purple People Eaters 2, Army Girls 2 (Purple People Eaters win shootout, 3-2): It was a well-played, hard fought match, with both teams bringing their best game. The Purple People Eaters, on the heels of Makayla Swies, racked up two quick goals in the first quarter. The Army Girls scored in the second quarter and on a penalty kick in the third quarter.

The game ended in a regulation tie, 2-2. After two quarters of overtime, the game was still tied. The game went to penalty kicks. With five opportunities each, the first portion of penalty kicks ended tied with Purple People Eater goals by Breyanna Komadina and Kathryn De La Torre.

In sudden death, the Purple People Eaters’ Molly Manser put a beautiful shot in the upper corner of the goal to win the game in dramatic walk-off fashion. Great play by Morgan Thomson, Leah Van Dyke and Samantha Ludes added to the People Eaters’ winning effort.

BOYS UNDER 10

Quiksilver 3, Wolverines 1: The Wolverines scored the first goal, but it was called back due to offsides. This fired up Quiksilver’s Zach Buggeln, who passed the ball to Campbell D’Eliscu for the score. The Wolverines drove down to the Quiksilver’s defensive wall of Killian Headington, Mike Lugo, Daniel Ross and Kyle Zimmerman, who stopped them from scoring. The Wolverines had a shot, but goalie Cole Sorensen made a great save.

Heading into the fourth quarter, it remained a 1-1 tie. Quiksilver forward Alex Kerr dribbled the ball into Wolverines territory, and passed the ball to Brandon Rawson, who set up David Schaefer for the score to break the tie. With minutes to go in the game, midfielder Bobby Kearns turned the ball around to Rory Fleming, who lobbed in the goal.

Quiksilver 5, Falcons 0: Quiksilver coaches Bruce D’Eliscu and Tim Zimmerman fired up the team for the finals. Quiksilver forwards Alex Kerr and Brandon Rawson passed the ball to Campbell D’Eliscu for a goal. The Falcons’ Garrett Hall drove down the field with Quiksilver defender Bobby Kearns on him. Hall passed the ball, but Quiksilver’s defense of Daniel Ross, Killian Headington and Cole Sorensen stopped the drive. In the second quarter, Mike Lugo drove the ball down and passed to Zach Buggeln, who scored the second Quiksilver goal. The Falcons were fighting hard when Kearns had a strong kick 15 yards out for a score. David Schaefer stole the ball and charged down the field. He had a great pass to Campbell D’Eliscu, who scored the fourth Quiksilver goal. With time running out, Kyle Zimmerman stopped a pass and moved the ball up to Rory Fleming, who shot the ball for the final Quiksilver score.

BOYS UNDER 12

Golden Bullets 4, Hornets 1: The score was tied, 1-1, at the half on a goal by Hans Anderle for the Golden Bullets and a penalty kick by the Hornets. Three more goals were scored in the second half by the Bullets -- two by Tanner DeBerry, and another by Anderle.

Golden Bullets 8, Anacondas 0: The Bullets came out strong, and held the Anacondas scoreless, winning, 8-0.

Both the offense and defense played strong in all positions. Defense by Josh Vanderwal, Hans Anderle and Eric Reeker limited the Anacondas’ shooting opportunities. Goals were scored by Adrian Ferrara (three goals), Tanner DeBerry (two goals), Alex Chairez (two goals) and Alan Rodriguez (one goal). The whole team did an outstanding job, playing their positions with skill and determination.
