Now is it world class?

That’s better, right?
Newport Beach city leaders last week released an updated version of the proposed city hall, with some architectural tweaks and environmentally friendly twists.
The new design has towers at two entrances, a fountain and a larger outdoor plaza, plus solar panels to provide electricity.
It’s certainly an improvement on the boxier early version. But still -- is it enough?
The City Council will be the ones to decide that, but we’d kick ourselves during construction if we didn’t pass along one idea we’ve heard: Base the design on the P. Lovell House, which is just down the road on the peninsula and is Newport’s main claim to architectural fame. It’s modern. It’s different. And it might make an interesting, world-class style for a city hall.
Or, at the least, it adds to the already blaring debate about what, and whether, to build.
