YOUTH FOOTBALL
Burbank Vikings: The city’s youth tackle organization had to deal
with problems Saturday stemming from the fire in the hills above
Burbank.
The organization’s teams use Burbank High for their home games,
however, the school was used as a staging area for firefighters and
no games could be played at the facility.
As a result, three games had to be relocated to Saugus High and
four had to be postponed.
Leading the way for Burbank was its Senior Black (3-1) team, which
earned a 50-0 victory against Santa Clarita Tatonka.
On the losing end, the Bantam Black (1-3) lost to Santa Clarita
Seminoles, 36-6, the Bantam-Green (0-4) fell to Santa Clarita
Redskins, 34-6, and Senior Green (2-2) lost to Santa Clarita
Seminoles, 56-0.
CROSS COUNTRY
Kenny Staub Invitational: Fires emanating from the Verdugo
Mountains and Chatsworth area claimed another local sporting event on
Saturday.
Due to conditions deemed unsafe, the 38th annual invitational was
postponed.
Burbank and Burroughs were scheduled to take part in the meet.
The event, which is hosted by Crescenta Valley High and takes
place at Crescenta Valley Park, is scheduled for this Saturday at the
same place and, likely, the same 8:15 a.m. start time.
“We’re gonna go Saturday,” said invitational organizer and
Crescenta Valley Coach Mark Evans.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs and Indians will be unable to attend
the makeup meet because they are scheduled to take part in the
prestigious Clovis Invitational the same day.
The event was called off around 5:20 a.m. Saturday morning. It
consists of 16 races covering three divisions and four levels (frosh,
sophomore, junior varsity and varsity).
“No one really had any problems [with the cancellation] after they
got out of their cars and saw all the smoke while they were driving
in,” Evans said.
Evans said that because of scheduling conflicts, some teams will
not return this week, and that he’s looking to add new teams.
Bellarmine-Jefferson High Coach Jim Couch said his teams might be
interested in competing in the meet.
