The prep football programs at Marina and Edison already know what
Hell Week is all about. This week, the programs at Huntington Beach
and Ocean View are finding out what it’s all about, as they continue
to go through the rigors of two-a-day drills.
The four local schools have begun preparations in earnest for the
2005 season, which for Marina and Edison begins on Sept. 2.
Huntington Beach and Ocean View launch their seasons the following
week.
Edison and Marina began preseason drills 10 days ago, but Huntington Beach and Ocean View officially opened camp Monday
“We’ve been going at it real hard, and we’re excited to get the
season started,” said Romney Fuga, a 6-foot-2, 270-pound senior
offensive and defensive tackle at Edison. “We’re ready for that first
game.”
While most teams eagerly anticipate their season opener, Edison’s
players have the good fortune of opening their season in Hawaii Sept.
2. The Chargers, under head coach Dave White for the 20th year, will
take on defending state champion Kamehameha on Oahu.
On that same night, Marina -- coached by Mike Dodd -- journeys to
Rancho Cucamonga to battle Los Osos.
On Sept. 8, Ocean View opens its season against Garden Grove
Santiago at Garden Grove High.
The following night, Mike Groscost’s Huntington Beach troops will
take the field at Garden Grove High to play Los Amigos.
A new era in Ocean View football began Monday as Dean Yoshiyama
began his first official practice as head coach of the Seahawks.
Yoshiyama said 40 players came out for the team.
“Things are going really well so far, and the kids are working
really hard,” he said Tuesday, during a break between two-a-day
drills.
“This is a good group of kids we have here. This is all new to
them, so there’s a learning curve. Our focus is to just take care of
our self.”
Although preseason drills have been held for just a few days,
Seahawks players said they already feel a change in camp.
“It’s been great so far,” said senior Reice Hamel, a senior kicker
and defensive back. “This coaching staff is trying to turn things
around. They have set a high standard of play and intensity. I’m
looking forward to playing this season.”
Senior linebacker and center, Ismail Jaber, echoed Hamel’s
sentiments.
“I think it’s a really good coaching staff we have,” he said.
“They’re working hard to turn things around, and we’re working hard.
It’s been great, so far.”
