Delgado paces Breakers

Ramon Delgado of the Newport Beach Breakers continued his hot streak
in men’s singles and the World Team Tennis defending champions
improved to 5-2 as Coach Dick Leach’s Breakers topped the host
Delaware Smash, 20-14, in overtime Thursday at AstraZeneca Tennis
Facility in Wilmington, Del.
Delgado defeated Delaware’s Roger Anderson, 5-3, and, on the heels
of victories this week over Patrick Rafter and Jim Courier, is 6-0 in
singles.
Delgado and the Breakers face Andy Roddick and the host St. Louis
Aces on Saturday night.
The Smash fell to 1-6.
The Breakers conclude their road trip Sunday at Springfield.
Chandy on to final
* TRACK AND FIELD: Sage Hill School senior-to-be Zach Chandy
qualified for today’s 400-meter final at the World Junior
championships (under 18) following a second-place finish in his
semifinal heat Thursday in Marrakech, Morroco.
Chandy, the CIF Southern Section Division IV 200 and 400 champion,
clocked 47.40 seconds and finished behind Sudan’s Al-Nour Adam
Mohommed (46.84).
Chandy’s time was the third fastest out of three heats Thursday.
Long Beach Poly’s Bryshon Nellum qualified second in Heat 2 in
47.69, setting up another competition between the two stars who faced
each other numerous times during the CIF postseason.
UCI’s Choe defeated
* GOLF: UC Irvine soon-to-be senior Jay Choe won his Thursday
morning match but was defeated in the afternoon at the 80th U.S.
Amateur Public Links championship at Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon,
Ohio.
In the round of 32, Choe defeated Gilberto Rodriguez of Mexico
(and San Diego State), 5 and 4. Martin Ureta of Chile, who plays at
the University of North Carolina, ousted Choe with a 4 and 3 victory
in the afternoon’s round of 16.
Michelle Wie, 15, advanced to Friday morning’s round of 8 after
defeating Jim Renner, 3 and 1, Thursday afternoon.
Henderson, Won fall
* GOLF: UC Irvine soon-to-be sophomore Selanee Henderson and
soon-to-be senior Angela Won advanced to the round of 64 match play
at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links championship held Monday
through Saturday at Swope Memorial Golf Course in St. Louis, Mo.
Both fell in the round of 64.
Henderson, who shot a 2-over 144 to finish 12th during the 36-hole
stroke play, lost to Karen Quinn of Australia 3 and 2, while Won lost
to Tiffany Chudy from Miramar, Fla. 3 and 2.
Van’t Hof goes down
* TENNIS: Mike Mc Clune, a 15-year-old from Irvine, rallied to
defeat Kaes Van’t Hof, an 18-year-old USC sophomore from Newport
Beach, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, to capture the pre-qualifying tournament for
the Mercedes-Benz Cup presented by Countrywide at the Los Angeles
Tennis Club.
