The Ocean View Little League 9/10 All-Star team showed last week it
has no intention of relinquishing the District 62 title it won last
year.
Ocean View launched its bid for a repeat run by routing host
Fountain Valley, 12-2, in the first game of the 9/10 tournament. The
Area 1 game was played at Mile Square Park.
The Area 2 competition is being played at Huntington Valley Little
League.
Ocean View’s offense generated 14 hits in the 10-run victory.
“Before the game, we told the kids that if we could shut them down
in the top of the first inning and come back with four or five runs
in the bottom-half [of the inning], it would put them in a deep
hole,” Ocean View manager Gorden Gates said. “Jumping out to that
early lead helped us to relax and get into the flow of the game.
“Once we got the momentum going for us, we were tough to come back
on. Every game is a tough one, and getting this first one under our
belt will go a long way to succeeding in the tournament. With this
age group, confidence is an important factor and our kids gained a
lot of it with their performance today.”
Ocean View’s offense had plenty of offensive standouts in the
game.
Tyler Mildenberg went three for three with two doubles and scored
four runs, Zachary Gates went four for four with a pair of doubles
and three RBI, Casey Hayes homered among his two hits and finished
with four RBI, Grant Mayeaux doubled twice and drove in a run and
Jake Arledge had a home run and drove in two runs.
Max Gibbs and Ben Drolet also had hits in the 14-hit attack.
Hayes pitched three solid innings and gave up one run on two hits.
Gibbs finished up the fourth inning and yielded a run but not a hit.
In other All-Star games:
Majors Division
Huntington Valley 11, Costa Mesa National 1
In an Area 2 game at Inspirational Field, host Huntington Valley
easily disposed of Costa Mesa National in a game called after five
innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Huntington Valley led, 9-0, through three innings against an
error-plagued Costa Mesa National squad.
C.J. Hollingsworth went the distance and gave up just five hits in
recording the win.
Costa Mesa American 7, Seaview 4
In the first Area 2 game at Inspirational Field, Seaview jumped
out to a 2-0 lead but couldn’t hold off Costa Mesa American.
Hits by Charlie Miller, Matt Kibby and Drew Daily allowed Seaview
to grab the early lead in the second inning.
Costa Mesa American gained control of the game by scoring seven
runs over the next two innings.
