“We believe there could very well be more arrests. We don’t know in
how long, or if for sure that will take place.”
-- Steve Shulman, Newport Beach Police sergeant, after police
arrested a fourth man in the disappearance and presumed killing of a
couple, Tom and Jackie Hawks, who had been living on a yacht in
Newport Harbor.
“I never thought I’d do something like this. I’m just thankful
Scott was in there with me. I’m thankful we survived and thankful
that nobody in the bank got hurt.”
-- Darcy Andelin, of the Newport Beach Police Department, who
received the department’s Medal of Valor along with Scott Grecco for
an encounter in a bank with an armed man. Andelin and Grecco had to
fire on the man, who later died of his wounds. The two were among 12
members of the department to be honored at the 34th annual Police
Appreciation Breakfast last week.
“We want this community center to be well utilized. We don’t want
it to be under-parked. Since the pad for the library isn’t going to
be used for a library, let’s use it for parking spaces.”
-- Homer Bludau, Newport Beach city manager, on a community center
planned for Newport Coast, where the amount of parking is at issue.
“Obviously, it’s water that soaks into the ground and migrates up
into the canyon and percolates up into a stream. It’s pretty much
flowing pretty steadily.”
-- Steve Badum, Newport Beach public works director, referring to
runoff that is plaguing Buck Gully. The City Council last week
approved a $90,000 contract to determine the source of the
pollutants.
“We don’t know which schools have the needs. It just turned out
that TeWinkle Middle School needed them, so we directed them over
there.”
-- Marilyn Smith, a spokeswoman for the Irvine Ranch Water
District, on the district donating eight computers to TeWinkle.
