Vanguard wins 16th straight

Vanguard University’s women’s basketball team held host Hope
International to 16.1% field-goal shooting (10 for 62) and won its
16th straight game with a 63-32 Golden State Athletic Conference
victory Saturday.
Sophomore Kelly Schmidt tallied her eighth double-double this
season with 22 points and 12 rebounds to go with a team-high three
blocks for the Lions (18-1, 9-0 in the GSAC).
Lisa Faulkner added 15 points and eight assists while Andrea
Jacobson and Rachel Besse each finished with eight points for
Vanguard, which held the Royals (3-15, 0-9) to 4-of-32 shooting
(12.5%) in the second half.
Lacey Burns grabbed eight rebounds and added five points while
Besse and Lacey Mills each tallied six rebounds for the visitors.
Jasmine Nault paced Hope International with 13 points.
UCI holds off Utah
* TENNIS: The UC Irvine women’s tennis team received sterling play
from its top two singles players and doubles teams to collect the
squad’s first victory of the spring season with a 4-3 nonconference
win over the University of Utah Saturday on the University of Oregon
campus in Eugene, Ore.
Anna Bentzer, Izabela Mijic and Inna Agababian all won their
singles and doubles matches for the Anteaters (1-1). Bentzer and
Mijic each won their singles matches in straight sets while Agababian
defeated Allison Hansen, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Utah fell to 0-2.
Lions fall in overtime
* BASKETBALL: Mark Roussin tallied game highs in points(24) and
rebounds (11) to help the Hope International men’s basketball team
snap a seven-game losing streak and collect their first Golden State
Athletic Conference victory this season following a 73-65 overtime
triumph over visiting Vanguard Saturday night.
The Lions (8-10, 3-6 in the GSAC) shot just 1 of 9 from the field
(11.1%) in overtime and were outscored, 13-5.
Levi Seekins led four Lions in double figures with 20 points while
teammates Leon Rosborough and Tim Burnette added 19 and 13 points,
respectively.
The Royals improved to 4-12, 1-8.
