The Newport-Mesa fifth- and sixth-grade National Junior Basketball
Celtics bolted to a 12-1 halftime lead and held on to win, 24-18, on
Jan. 16.
Saylor Schroff led the Celtics with 14 points, while Angelique
Plecas and Syd Raguse chipped in four points apiece. Taya Winkle and
Niki Zak led the Celtics’ defense.
Sylvie Reynolds led the Spirit with 12 points and Asia Andry had
four.
* Storm 20, Rim Rattlers 12
Seven different players scored in the Storm’s 20-12 victory over
the Rim Rattlers.
Duran Sharp had nine points to lead the Storm and R. Gabby
contributed six points. Amanda Parrill led the Rattlers with seven
points.
* Wango Tango 16, Mustangs 15
The Wango Tango scored on a putback with less than a minute to go
and downed the Mustangs, 16-15. T. Shrikian had eight points for the
Tango, while Rikki Archie (5) and Kathryn Thompson (4) led the
Mustangs.
* Epics 22, Aqua Nets 20
The Epics ran out to a 16-4 halftime lead and held on to win,
22-20, with Mae Ling Choquette scoring nine points for the winners.
MacKenzie Dalton added six points for the Epics, while Ava Soleimany
(10) and Yazmine Azadi (6) led the Nets.
Rockets streaking
* BASKETBALL: The Eastlbuff Boys and Girls Club fourth-grade
Rockets basketball team earned their third straight victory,
defeating the Kings, 24-18.
Jason Cowan led the Rockets, as he nailed a couple of key shots in
the fourth quarter, while Grant Brown, Jeff Lloyd, Carter Keddinton
and Rob Rosenast also contributed.
Amanda Girvin, Weston Wright and Colby Watson led the defense.
* Knicks 28, Celtics 20
The Knicks defeated the previously undefeated Celtics, 28-20, with
Ryan Griffin leading the way with 12 points.
Griffin’s sister, Shannon, and cousin, Charlie, both added six.
The Celtics were led by Drew Olson and Blake Motol.
* Cavaliers 29, Mavericks 20
The Cavaliers defeated the Mavericks, 29-20. Reid Meckler was the
scoring leader for the Cavaliers, while Jeff Garrett drilled a key
three-point basket.
Troy Reese, Hunter Heckedorn and Tyler McPhillips led the
Mavericks.
CdM squad wins twice
* SOCCER: The AYSO Area 11 boys under-14 Corona del Mar all-star
soccer team defeated Newport Beach, 5-1, and Tustin, 3-2.
Against Newport, Camden Nicholson and Kevin Wang scored two goals
apiece, while Ori Tabak added one of his own. Corona del Mar’s
defense was led by Kenny Cooper, James Petrilli, Karl Fletcher, Alex
Mainthow, Scotty Berkhausen and Brad Jones.
In the victory against Tustin, Nicholson score two more goals,
while Evan McNerney added another. Eric Hansen stepped up on defense,
while the midfield play of Colin Gray, Karl Fletcher, Joey Cooper,
Andrew Iverson and McNerney helped in CdM’s effort.
