Police make arrest in March 2004 burglary

Using fingerprints left at the scene, Laguna Beach police

detectives have once again made an arrest in a cold case, police

said.

Mario Joe Olguin, 30, of Rialto, was arrested at 10:30 a.m.

Wednesday on suspicion of the burglary of an elderly couple’s home in

the 1000 block of Marine Drive last March, after police detectives

matched his fingerprints , police said.

When police responded to a neighbor’s call about a broken window

on March 15, they discovered a loss of more than $10,000, including a

Lincoln Continental, police said. Police found a can of beer left at

the scene and fingerprints on a broken glass window, which led them

to Olguin, said Det. Andrew Ross.

“He had been arrested before, unrelated to our charge, and that’s

why we had his prints,” Sgt. Darin Lenyi said.

Police issued a warrant for Olguin’s arrest in May and took him

into custody Wednesday morning at a friend’s house in Baldwin Park,

police said.

DNA samples were taken from the beer can that was left at the

scene and a match to Olguin’s DNA would secure the case, said Ross.

According to police, a DNA match could take several weeks to

determine.

Olguin was booked on a felony charge of residential burglary and

is being held on a $50,000 bail, police said.

Skateboarder injured in collision with car

A local transient traveling on a skateboard was hit by a car at

4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Mountain Road and Catalina Street,

police said.

The man was airlifted to a nearby trauma center and suffered a

concussion and broken pelvis, police said. He is expected to survive

his injuries, police said.

According to preliminary accounts of the accident, police said the

man failed to stop at a stop sign and was hit by the car.
