Almquist assists Sea Kings’ win

Senior captain Grant Almquist had two assists in the Corona del Mar
High boys soccer team’s 2-0 win over host University in a Pacific
Coast League opener Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Allan Hardison took a cross from Almquist in the 30th
minute and went one-on-one with University’s goalie, slipping it by
for a 1-0 lead before halftime.
In the 49th minute, Senior Nick Ossipoff took a deflected corner
kick from Almquist and fired it in from the top of the penalty box,
and CdM (7-4-2, 1-0 in league) rode it out from there on defense.
Mesa improves to 2-0
* WATER POLO: Senior Sarah Bowman tallied two goals and the Costa
Mesa High girls water polo team improved its league record to 2-0
with a 5-3 Golden West League victory over visiting Saddleback
Wednesday at Estancia High.
Carley Millian, Chandra Malapira and Allyson Harris all scored one
goal for Costa Mesa, and Christine Twohig was credited with one
assist.

Tars rope Wolverines
* SOCCER: The Newport Harbor High boys soccer team used a twin
connection to earn its second win of the season, defeating host Aliso
Niguel, 1-0, Wednesday in Sea View League play.
Ruben Trujillo crossed a pass to his twin brother, William, in the
15th minute and the latter Trujillo avoided Aliso’s charging goalie
and squeaked the ball past for the lone goal of the game.
Newport (2-7-2, 1-1 in league) took six total shots on goal with
one of them getting by, and the Sailors used their defense for the
remainder.
Vanguard stumbles
* BASKETBALL: Brian Kim had four three-pointers and 24 points for
the Vanguard University men’s basketball team, but the Lions fell to
Westmont, 94-72, in Golden State Athletic Conference action Wednesday
in Santa Barbara.
Levi Seekings contributed 22 points for Vanguard (7-8, 2-4 in the
GSAC), while Leon Rosborough chipped in eight points.

Fullerton tops Coast
* BASKETBALL: Lance Ortiz had a game-high 31 points, but it wasn’t
enough, as the Orange Coast College men’s basketball team lost to
visiting Fullerton, 71-63, in Orange Empire Conference play Thursday.
Mykel Valentine chipped in 10 points for the Pirates (8-8, 0-3 in
the OEC), while Dave Seifert grabbed eight rebounds.
Hornets handle OCC
* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s basketball team
shot 27.5% from the field and lost to visiting Fullerton, 61-43,
Wednesday in Orange Empire Conference play.
Valerie Katayama shared a game-high 12 points with Fullerton’s
Caricia Jones and Joial Griffith, while Rhondi Naff scored 11 points
for the Pirates (12-6, 2-1 in the OEC).
