on hospital board

Hoag Hospital Vice President Richard Martin has been appointed to

the Hospital Assn. of Southern California Board of Directors.

Martin will serve a one-year term as the patient care

administration representative. Throughout his term, Martin will chair

the association’s subcommittee on patient administration. He plans to

focus on issues regarding the state’s nurse shortage.

The Hospital Assn. of Southern California consists of 170

hospitals throughout Southern California.

Imam leaves U.S. after having been detained

Anaheim Islamic leader Wagdy Ghoneim, an imam at the Islamic

Institute of Orange County, announced last week that he and his

family will leave the U.S.

Ghoneim has been held by immigration authorities for two months

because his visa is expired, but family members and Muslim leaders

were upset that he was not allowed to post bond and asked Newport

Beach Rep. Chris Cox to look into the case.

After a bond hearing Tuesday, Ghoneim’s attorney announced the

family will leave the country “to resume a normal life in freedom in

another country,” a statement from the Council on American-Islamic

Relations said. Some in the Muslim community said Ghoneim’s situation

was a case study of how Muslims are being unfairly targeted by

immigration authorities in the name of homeland security.

Christmas trees can be recycled through city

The city of Costa Mesa will pick up Christmas trees for recycling

as part of regular trash collection through Jan. 14.

To recycle your tree, remove the stand and all decorations, and

place the tree by the curb by 6:30 a.m. on your regular trash day.

The Costa Mesa Sanitary District sponsors the tree recycling, which

turns the trees into mulch for nature trail maintenance and

soil-erosion control.

Multi-family housing and commercial businesses that do not have

curbside service must arrange for tree pickup with their trash

hauler.

Another Hoag V.P. takes on added duty

A vice president at Hoag Hospital has been appointed state

director of the American Academy of Medical Administrators.

Susan Goldberg, vice president of cardiovascular services for the

Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute, will represent California within

the academy, a healthcare professionals’ association founded in 1957.

As state director, Goldberg will promote scholarship and research

programs and medical education for workers in healthcare management.
