Eight Corona del Mar high football players have been named
All-Pacific Coast League by the league’s coaches.
Senior receiver Kevin Welch and senior tailback Wess Presson are
first-team picks on offense while junior end Matt Burgner and senior
linebacker John Shanahan are first-team honorees on defense.
Senior quarterback Tom Welch and senior fullback Austin Brawner
are second-team selections on offense.
Junior linebacker Shaun Mohler and senior cornerback David del
Fante are second-team choices on defense.
Kevin Welch, a first-team selection last year, was second in the
league with 735 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. His 39
receptions were also among the league leaders.
Presson led the Sea Kings with 1,328 rushing yards and 14 TDs on
188 carries, the second-most productive rushing output in the league.
Burgner, a first-team selection as a sophomore, continued to
terrorize opposing backfields by leading the league with 16 sacks.
His 104 tackles were third-most in the league.
Shanahan, an inside linebacker, had 93 tackles. He finished with
10 or more tackles in three games, including a season-high 16 against
Northwood.
Tom Welch was a dual threat at quarterback. The senior completed
83 of 166 pass attempts (50%) for 1,412 yards and 16 TDs. He also
rushed for 498 yards and nine TDs on 93 carries.
Brawner was a bruising blocker who rushed for 192 yards with two
TDs on 43 carries and caught eight passes for 67 yards.
Mohler, an inside linebacker, was CdM’s second-leading tackler
with 95 stops, including 62 solo tackles. He led CdM with six games
of 10 or more tackles.
Northwood quarterback Dan Selway is the league’s MVP.
