The UC Irvine men’s basketball team returns to action after a 10-day
layoff for finals when the Anteaters visit Santa Clara tonight at 7.
UCI (2-2) brings an 11-game road losing streak into tonight’s
clash with the Broncos (6-3), who have wins over North Carolina and
Stanford this season.
Santa Clara, however, is coming off a surprising 98-89 loss at Cal
Poly San Luis Obispo, which recorded its first win in five games this
season.
The Anteaters have lost road games at USC and UCLA. They have
defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills and Sacramento State in their two
home games.
UCI is led by junior point guard Aaron Fitzgerald (17.3 points and
six assists per game), junior guard Ross Schraeder (15 ppg) and
senior center Greg Ethington (14.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per
contest).
Santa Clara, 4-0 at home this season, is paced by junior forward
Travis Niesen (16 ppg) and senior guard Doran Perkins (14.7 ppg).
This is UCI’s first meeting with Santa Clara. It’s also the first
game of a two-game road trip for Coach Pat Douglass’ Anteaters, who
visit San Jose State Friday at 7 p.m.
