Lady Vikings defeat rival Dwyer in eighth-grade final

The Sowers Middle School girls’ eighth-grade basketball team laid

claim to the Newport Mesa Unified School District championship by

defeating cross-town rival Dwyer, 32-20, in the division final.

Mary Madden and Kelly Peterson each scored nine points and Kaitlin

Davis turned in one of her best performances in her career, finishing

with eight points -- six of which came on a pair of three-point

baskets.

But the big story of the game for Sowers was the play of Madden,

who unknowingly played the entire fourth quarter with a broken

finger.

“We had no idea it was broken,” Coach Kyle Morita said. “A couple

of hours after the game, when her adrenaline subsided, she started to

feel the pain. She went to the emergency room where they told her it

was a fracture.”

It was the last game for Sowers’ outstanding trio of Madden,

Peterson and Michelle Yamasaki.

The three have won three consecutive district championships and 23

straight games, a streak that extends back to the second game of

their sixth-grade season.

“They were a great group of kids whom we will miss, but enjoy

following their high school careers,” Morita said.

Sowers’ seventh-grade squad also reached the championship final in

its division, but lost close title game to Ensign, 28-24.

The Lady Vikings, who were down by as many as 12 points, pulled to

within two points in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer.

Danielle Miller scored eight of her 10 points down the stretch,

despite having to exit the game twice due to muscle cramps.

“It was a bizarre game,” Morita said. “We beat them by 26 points

the first game of the year. We feel like we got ambushed. They played

an unbelievable game defensively. We wish we had another shot at

them, but unfortunately that’s going to have to be next year.”
