Mustangs open with convincing win

Junior Jasmin Day scored a game-high three goals and added an assist
to help lead the host Costa Mesa High girls soccer team to a 5-0
nonleague victory over Rosary in the Mustangs’ season opener Tuesday.
Day, a two-time first-team All-Golden West League selection, was
joined in the scoring column by senior returner Jenny Sparks, who
added one goal while tallying two assists, and senior Eva Garcia.
Senior Nilani Duarte and sophomore Sharon Frazier each added one
assist while goalkeeper Kendra Bailey made four saves for Mesa.
Loper leads Lightning
* BASKETBALL: Senior Matt Loper scored a career-high 28 points
while adding 10 rebounds and four steals to pace the Sage Hill School
boys basketball team to a 61-30 nonleague victory over visiting
Orangewood Academy in the teams’ season opener Tuesday.
Loper, a second-team All-Academy League honoree last season, shot
11 of 15 from the field and went 5 of 5 from the free-throw line.
Mike Voge and Jordan Ogron each scored eight points while Tim
Lefler added five for Sage, which led, 50-15, after three quarters.

Sage opens with shutout
* SOCCER: Freshman Kellee Kim’s hat trick, along with single goals
from three different players, helped the Sage Hill School girls
soccer team open its season with a 6-0 nonleague victory over host
Rancho Alamitos Tuesday.
Freshmen Claire Josephson and Colleen Heyler, along with senior
Amy Werblin, each tallied single goals while sophomores Kara Percival
and Ali McLaughlin had two assists apiece for the Lightning, who led,
4-0, at halftime.
Rachel Blitzer and Josephson each added an assist while senior
goalkeeper Laura Gordon made three saves.
Eagles surge past Bolsa
* WATER POLO: Four players scored two goals each to power the host
Estancia High girls water polo team to a 10-6 nonleague victory over
Bolsa Grande Tuesday.
Chelsea Kaplan, Carolina Barnes, Courtney Hess and Melissa
Buchmann each tallied two goals while Andrea Bray and Amaryah Thaler
had one goal apiece for the Eagles (1-1), who outscored Bolsa, 4-1,
in the third quarter to pull away.
Katie Mahan made 15 saves for Estancia, which suffered an 8-3 loss
to Garden Grove in its opener Monday.

* BASKETBALL: Junior Haywood Wright tallied a game-high 20 points
while three teammates also scored in double figures for the host Sage
Hill School girls basketball team, which opened its season with a
68-17 nonleague victory over visiting Orangewood Academy Tuesday
night.
Wright, a two-time first-team All-Academy League selection, added
13 rebounds -- 10 offensive -- and four blocks, while Katie Puishys
tallied 13 points to go with 11 rebounds. Vicky Gutierrez finished
with 11 points and four steals while Laura Schaefer tallied eight
assists. Debbie Yoder-Lee added nine points and five steals for Sage.

Sea Kings drop opener
* SOCCER: The Corona del Mar High girls soccer team lost to
visiting Mater Dei, 2-0, in the Sea Kings’ season opener Tuesday.
Senior co-captain Tanisha Senartne anchored the defense for the
Sea Kings, while junior Kelly Morgan led the offense. Mater Dei
scored both of its goals in the second half.
Bengals bomb ‘Eaters
* BASKETBALL: Sophomore guard Angie Ned tallied a career-high 17
points while teammate Courtney Ferguson also had 17 points, but it
was not enough as host Idaho State used hot three-point shooting to
send the visiting UC Irvine women’s basketball team to a 93-73
nonconference loss Tuesday night.
