Vikings out to win

Mike Sciacca

It’s been anything but an easy road for the Marina High football team

during the first seven weeks of the season.

But each week brings new hope, and hope abounds for the Vikings

tonight as they visit Edison in a Sunset League clash at Huntington

Beach High.

Kickoff at Sheue Field is 7 p.m.

Marina (0-7, 0-2) is coming off a 35-7 loss to Esperanza and has

been outscored in seven games, 285-48.

The Vikings will encounter an Edison squad that dropped a

heartbreaking, 31-24 overtime game to Los Alamitos last week.

They’ll be facing a Charger offense that has had little trouble in

lighting up the scoreboard this year, as Edison (5-2, 1-1) comes into

the game averaging nearly 30 points an outing.

Edison quarterback Brian Shrock had a huge game against Los

Alamitos by hitting 24 of 36 pass attempts for 297 yards and a

touchdown.

Other games:

FRIDAY

Esperanza (5-2, 1-1) vs. Huntington (4-2-1, 0-2)

(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)

Huntington will be looking to regain the momentum it had in the

first five weeks of the season when it hosts high-scoring Esperanza.

The Oilers need a win here to stay in the hunt for a playoff berth

as consecutive losses to Edison and Fountain Valley ended a five-game

undefeated streak.

Huntington’s offense will need to be more prolific than the ones

that averaged just eight points in the past two weeks.

Esperanza gained its first league win last week at the expense of

Marina, 35-7. Rocky Taloa rushed for 137 yards and Shane Henry also

rushed past the century mark with 119 more to power the Aztecs.

In 2003, Huntington scored its first win over Esperanza in Sunset

League play.

Last year’s score: Huntington 14, Esperanza 10 SATURDAY

Ocean View (1-6) vs. El Modena (1-5-1)

(at Orange High, 7 p.m.)

Ocean View takes a break from Golden West League action to take on

El Modena in a nonleague matchup.

The Seahawks played one of their better games last week against

Costa Mesa, but still ended up on the short end of a 25-22 score.

Ocean View had taken a 22-8 halftime lead but couldn’t score in

the second half.

Quarterback Aaron Valenzuela rushed for 80 yards and threw for 103

more, which included teaming up with Justin Geifer on a 61-yard

scoring play in the first quarter.

Geifer led all receivers with 103 yards on three receptions.

El Modena nearly pulled off an upset of Villa Park last week, but

fell to the Spartans, 10-9.

Like Ocean View, the Vanguards led throughout the game but saw

Villa Park rally with 10, fourth quarter points.

Eddie Banuelos threw for 115 yards and a touchdown in defeat.

Last year’s score: Teams did not meet.
