CdM handles Breakers, but loses player

Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team jumped to a 6-0 lead after

the first round and never looked back, handing visiting Laguna Beach

a 13-5 setback in a Pacific Coast League match Thursday.

CdM, however, did experience a loss, when Coach Brian Ricker

received word 30 minutes before the match that sophomore Jill

Braverman had quit the team.

Ricker said attending all practices and matches had become a

problem for Braverman, who was 18-3 in singles this season for the

Sea Kings.

“You can’t lose a player that good,” Ricker said. “But I was happy

with the way the team stepped up today.”

CdM freshman Allie Walters upset Laguna’s junior standout Claire

Rietsch, 6-4, while Miranda Young and Rachael Miller defeated Katie

Ochwat and partner Lauren Thigpen, 7-6 (7-5), en route to sweeping

three sets. Rietsch hadn’t lost a singles set all season.

Sophomore Jill Damion improved to 22-5 in singles -- 25-5 overall

-- with two victories while the doubles duos of Hayley Young and

Jamie Steele, along with Roxanne Kaiden and Michelle Atkins, each

claimed two sets for the Sea Kings (11-2, 5-0 in league), ranked

third in CIF Division I. Laguna (8-3, 2-2) is ranked fifth in the

same division.

Mesa doubles dominate

Costa Mesa High’s girls tennis team swept all nine doubles sets

for the second straight match, helping the Mustangs post a 15-3

Golden West League victory over visiting Ocean View Thursday.

Maria Garcia and Uyen Le improved to 15-0 in doubles since Sept.

30 with a sweep while the duos of Gwen Martinez and Anh Le each

tallied three wins for the Mustangs (7-3 in league).

Mesa’s Evelyn Wallace swept in singles and is now 22-8.

Sailors hold off Hawks

Newport Harbor High received doubles sweeps from two tandems to

earn an 11-7 Sea View League win over visiting Laguna Hills Thursday.

Sasha Dunlap and Brittanny Sturgess, as well as the duo of Alex

McIntosh and Melissa Chinn each won three sets for the Sailors (8-6,

4-1 in league).

Eagles’ streak snapped

Estancia High saw its 20-match winning streak in Golden West

League play end with a 10-8 loss to host Westminster Thursday.

Sage O’Toole and Cathy Pittman swept in doubles while Sara

Stratton won twice in singles for the Eagles (9-4, 8-1 in league).

Estancia and Westminster (8-1 in league) are tied for the league

lead.
