Albright’s eagle sparks CdM

Katie Albright earned medalist honors with a 2-over-par 38 to power
the Corona del Mar High girls golf team to a 224-295 victory over
Beckman Tuesday on the par-36 Tustin Ranch Golf Club.
Albright eagled the par-5 ninth hole, which requires an approach
shot to clear a water hazard.
Katie McKitterick carded a 39 while teammates Caitlin McDonald
(47), Maggie Nelson (50) and Jonna Kim (50) contributed for the Sea
Kings (6-1, 2-1 in the Pacific Coast League).
CdM hosts Northwood in a key league match at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at
Newport Beach Country Club.
Sage continues surge
* GOLF: The Sage Hill School girls golf team remained hot in
Golden West League play Tuesday, beating Oxford, 236-264, at Dad
Miller Golf Club in Anaheim.
Justine Chen shot a one-under-par 34 to pace all scores. The
freshman blazed out to a birdie-birdie start and ended with bogie on
the final hole to earn her best finish of the year.
Sophomores Emma Koh (44) and Natalie Craft (47), freshman Madison
Gillis (55) and senior Megan McGillivray (56) posted scores for the
Lightning.
Sage Hill (5-2, 5-1 in league) play Estancia today at Costa Mesa
Golf and Country Club.
CdM prevails in opener
* VOLLEYBALL: Senior outside hitter Jordan Smith tallied team
highs with 21 kills and 11 digs and added two digs to lead the host
Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team to a 25-12, 25-19, 20-25,
25-23 victory over Tesoro in the Pacific Coast League opener for both
teams Tuesday.
Senior Lindsey Ensign tallied 15 kills, six digs and two blocks
while Traci Lawson finished with 22 assists for the Sea Kings (13-4).
Kelly Christian added 20 assists while Britta Nielsen and Breanne
Ogden tallied nine and seven digs, respectively. Rylee Dennis and
Erica Solis each had a solo block.
Lightning boys stay hot
* CROSS COUNTRY: Sage Hill School’s boys cross country team
remained undefeated in Academy League dual meets with an 18-44
victory over Brethren Christian Tuesday at Mason Park.
Sage’s girls squad also earned victory after Brethren fielded just
four runners.
Mike Voge finished first overall (17:05) to lead the Sage boys
(5-0, 4-0) while Connor Rose took second in 17:10, a personal best.
Zach Chandy (fourth in 17:54), Tim Lefler (fifth in 18:12) and Nick
Gross (sixth in 18:32) rounded out the top five for the Lightning.
Gross set a personal best by 18 seconds,
Katie McKeon placed first overall (20:14) to lead the Sage girls
(3-2, 2-2) while Erica Faris took third in 21:26, besting her prior
best by 11 seconds. Mollie McGann finished fourth in 21:40 while
Rachel Blitzer placed sixth in 23:11, taking 1:24 off her prior best
time. Kelsey Rose took 10th in 23:43.
Tars earn league win
* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High girls golf team earned its first
Sea View League victory of the year, beating Irvine, 236-269, at Oak
Creek Golf Club Tuesday. Natalie Draganza was the medalist, shooting
a 2-over-par 38 for the Sailors (3-4, 1-2 in league). Kayliegh Horn
(44), Makite McKay (49), Kendall Horn (49) and Ashley Jacobs (56) all
posted scores for Newport Harbor.
The Tars play Santa Margarita today at 3 p.m. at Santa Ana Country
Club in a nonleague match, and resume league play Thursday against
Laguna Hills at Costa Mesa.
Painter pitches shutout
* SOCCER: Four different players tallied goals as the Orange Coast
College men’s soccer team posted a 4-0 Orange Empire Conference win
over visiting Irvine Valley Tuesday.
Will Sanchez got the Pirates (5-3-1, 3-1-0 in the OEC) on the
board first in the 37th minute with his first goal of the season on a
cross from Matt Schirmer.
The next two goals -- by Miguel Ochoa and Eli Solis -- came on
Jose Serpas assists in the 58th and 71st minutes, respectively. Ochoa
assisted Serpas in the 80th minute on the Pirates’ fourth goal.
OCC goalie Trent Painter recorded his third shutout while earning
two saves.
Irvine Valley fell to 2-7-1, 0-3-1.
The Pirates travel to Golden West at 6 p.m. Friday.
Lightning open strong
* VOLLEYBALL: Cat Dailey slammed 13 kills and added six digs to
pace the Sage Hill School girls volleyball team to a 25-11, 22-25,
25-17, 25-15 victory over visiting Oxford Tuesday in the Academy
League opener for both teams.
Haywood Wright added 12 kills while Kelsey Lawler tallied 35
assists and two service aces for the Lightning (7-4), who face host
Capistrano Valley Christian at 5 p.m. Friday before a league showdown
against St. Margaret’s on the Sage floor Oct. 12.
Tars dominate doubles
* TENNIS: The Newport Harbor High girls tennis team continued its
trend, dominating in doubles play in an 11-7 victory Tuesday against
host Foothill.
The Tars’ No. 1 doubles team Sasha Dunlap and Brittany Sturgess
and No. 3 team of Megan McKay and Carly Adams swept their sets. The
No. 2 squad of Brittany Cluck and freshman Alex McIntosh won two of
three sets.
Newport Harbor improved to 5-5, 1-1 in league.

* FIELD HOCKEY: Julia Bernay scored a goal off a Lyndsi Foster
assist as the Newport Harbor High field hockey team tied host Marina,
1-1, in a Sunset League game Tuesday. Ciara Lawrence made 13 saves in
goal for the Sailors (12-2-4).
Tartans trump Eagles
* GOLF: St. Margaret’s sent the visiting Estancia High girls golf
team to its first Golden West League loss with a 243-267 victory on
the par-35 Marbella Country Club Tuesday.
Piper Miller earned medalist honors with a 38 for St. Margaret’s
(7-0 in league) while Lina You led Estancia (4-3, 4-1) with a 47.
Bridget Gleason and Lauren Donner each shot 52 while Josie Flores
(54) and Lauren Cushing (62) contributed for the Eagles.
Lions swept at home
* VOLLEYBALL: Jaclyn Lee had 11 kills, but the host Vanguard
University women’s volleyball team lost to Biola, 30-17, 30-20,
30-23, in Golden State Athletic Conference action Tuesday night. VU
fell to 18-7, 5-4 in the GSAC; Biola improved to 13-5, 5-4.
Local wins bronze
* VOLLEYBALL: Newport Beach resident Allison Ahlfedt was a member
of the USA national women’s sitting volleyball team that won the
bronze medal in Athens in the Paralympic Games.
‘Eaters’ Evans lauded
* SOCCER: UC Irvine sophomore men’s soccer forward Brad Evans has
been named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for
the week ending Oct. 3.
Evans scored a pair of goals against UC Davis Friday , including
the game-winning goal in UCI’s 3-0 victory over the Aggies.
Evans’ two-goal performance was his second straight two-goal game
as he scored two goals, including the game-winner, in UCI’s 3-2 win
against the Portland Pilots at the Husky Fever Classic Sept. 26.
Lions tie Point Loma
* SOCCER: Ashley DeLoach and Jen Natoniewski each scored a goal
while goalkeeper Lauren Walker made 16 saves for the Vanguard
University women’s soccer team, which tied host Point Loma, 2-2,
Tuesday. Point Loma fired 18 shots while Vanguard (4-4-2, 0-2-1 in
the Golden State Athletic Conference) tallied five.
UCI’s Wing honored
* VOLLEYBALL: UC Irvine senior outside hitter Kelly Wing is the
Big West Conference Player of the Week in women’s volleyball after
leading the Anteaters to three wins last week.
Wing totaled 84 kills, 39 digs and 10 total blocks to earn the
honor. The senior had over 30 kills in two of the matches and also
delivered a total of 11 service aces to become UCI’s all-time leader
in that category.
The honor is Wing’s first this season and sixth in her career.
Wing became UCI’s career aces leader with five against Utah State
to raise her total 145. Wing passed former Anteater Gina Elchuck’s
20-year old record of 142, set from 1981-84.
