Sea Kings sweep University

The Corona del Mar High boys and girls cross country teams remained

unbeaten in Pacific Coast League meets Thursday by topping visiting

University at Bonita Creek Park.

The boys won, 20-36, and the girls prevailed, 15-45.

CdM junior Jack Turner led from wire-to-wire in the boys race, Sea

King Coach Bill Sumner said. Turner’s time of 16:15 was nine seconds

ahead of teammate Ryan Guthrie.

CdM’s Tommy Hutchinson (16:38) and Kenneth Wong (16:39) were

fourth and fifth, respectively.

Hilary May (19:29) and Alison Damon (19:36) were first and second,

respectively, as CdM girls also rounded out the first six places.

Nichole Slykhous (19:42), Devon Ahearn (19:46), Christie St. Geme

(19:50) and Ahlia Kattan (19:51) rounded out the CdM monopoly.

CdM’s boys and girls are now 3-0 in league, with key league

battles scheduled Thursday at Laguna Beach.

Eagles dominate foes

* CROSS COUNTRY: The Estancia High boys and girls cross country

teams earned dual-meet wins over Orange and Ocean View Thursday at

Fairview Park.

The Estancia boys beat Orange, 19-39, their first win over the

Panthers in three years, and topped Ocean View, 17-42.

The Estancia girls beat Ocean View, 16-43, and Orange, 23-34.

Senior Alex Cahuantzi (17:08) won the boys three-mile race, two

seconds ahead of sophomore teammate Alan Reza.

Jose Garcia (sixth in 17:46), Hector Garcia (ninth in 18:12) and

Giovanni Rodea (10th in 18:28) also stood out for the Eagles.

Estancia sophomore Sydney Barlow won the girls race in 20:02,

while teammates Unice Rodriguez (third in 21:08), Paula Negrete

(fourth in 21:27), Okairy Lomeli (seventh in 21:59), Karina Rios

(ninth in 22:10) and Lucy Leon (10th in 22:16) all ran well for the

winners.

Both Estancia teams are now 2-0 in league.

Estancia edges Mesa

* TENNIS: Estancia High sophomore Sara Stratton swept at No. 1

singles to lead the Eagles to a 10-8 Golden West League girls tennis

win over crosstown rival Costa Mesa Thursday on the Mustangs’ courts.

Estancia’s No. 1 doubles tandem of Sage O’Toole and Cathy Pittman

won two sets for the winners, who improved to 7-3, 6-0 in league.

Costa Mesa (4-6, 4-2) was paced by seniors Maria Garcia and Uyen

Le, who teamed to sweep in doubles. They are now 13-4 against league

doubles foes.

Hong-An Nguyen and Leah Le won two doubles sets for Costa Mesa.

They are 15-3 this season.

Sea Kings top Tesoro

* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High doubles teams Hayley Young and Jami

Steele, as well as Miranda Young and Alexandra Walters, each swept to

propel the host Sea Kings to a 13-5 Pacific Coast League-opening

girls tennis win Thursday over Tesoro.

Young and Steele won 18 of 25 games, while Young and Walters won

18 of 23 to help CdM improve to 6-1.

goals and junior teammate Kyle Thorsness added five to help the

Mustangs hold off Troy, 15-13, in a nonleague boys water polo game

Thursday at Troy.

Evan Spencer and Luke Yellin had three assists and one goal apiece

for the Mustangs, who improved to 7-2.

Golf Course in Anaheim.

Lina You earned medalist honors with a nine-hole round of 42,

while Bridget Gleason (43), Briana Eigenmann (48), Lauren Donner (49)

and Lauren Cushing (51) also helped the Eagles improve to 4-0 in

league, heading into a first-place showdown Tuesday with St.

Margaret’s.

Medalists pace CdM

* GOLF: Medalists Katie Albright and Katie McKitterick both shot

8-over-par 43 to lead the Corona del Mar High girls golf team to a

230-239 Pacific Coast League victory over Tesoro Thursday at Newport

Beach Country Club.

Maggie Nelson (45), Jonna Kim (47), Michelle Albrecht (52) and

Caitlin McDonald (52) also contributed for the winners, who improved

to 5-1, 1-1 in league.

Sailors pull out 1-0 win

* FIELD HOCKEY: Senior Reese Simmons scored off a Sasha Grumman

assist for the only goal in the Newport Harbor High field hockey

team’s 1-0 victory over host Huntington Beach Thursday.

The Sailors (11-1-3) extended their unbeaten streak to 12 games

with the win. Newport senior goalkeeper Ciara Lawrence made five

saves.

Mustangs tame Lions

* GOLF: The Costa Mesa High girls golf team earned its first

Golden West League triumph of the season Thursday, topping visiting

Westminster, 311-322, at the Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.

Christy Gregory was the medalist for the Mustangs, with a

nine-hole round of 56 on the par-35 course.

Melissa Pardue (60), Sarah Grabarsky (62), Abby Dayiv (66) and

Julia Jarasonsky (67) also chipped in for the Mustangs (1-3 in

league).

Wolverines top Tars

* GOLF: Newport Harbor High senior Kayleigh Horn made four

birdies, shot 1-under-par 35 and earned medalist honors, but host

Aliso Niguel captured a 201-214 Sea View League girls golf win

Thursday at Aliso Viejo Golf Club.

It was Horn’s first under-par performance for the Sailors, who

also received a personal-best 39 from senior Ashley Jacobs.

Natalie Draganza (40), Kendall Horn (47), Iko Kagasoff (53) and

Katie McKay (53) also contributed for the Sailors (2-4, 0-2 in

league).

Aliso improved to 3-4, 2-0.

Woodbridge beats Tars

* TENNIS: The Newport Harbor High girls tennis team lost, 10-8, to

visiting Woodbridge Thursday in the Sea View League opener for both

teams.

It is the second close loss in a row for the Sailors, who fell,

10-8, to Troy Wednesday.

Newport Harbor (5-5) was paced by No. 1 singles player Chrissy

Schwartz and the No. 1 doubles team of Brittanny Sturgess and Sasha

Dunlap, who won a combined four of the six sets they played.

Woodbridge improves to 6-4.

The Sailors travel to Foothill Tuesday.

Sage Hill defeated

* GOLF: Sage Hill School freshman Justine Chen shot 1-over-par 37

to capture medalist honors, but St. Margaret’s earned a 215-238

Golden West League girls golf victory over the Lightning Thursday at

Rancho San Joaquin Golf Club in Irvine.

Emma Koh (45), Natalie Kraft (55), Kimberly Venditozzi (57) and

Madison Gillis (57) also scored for the Lightning (4-1 in league).

St. Margaret’s improved to 5-0 in league, heading into Tuesday’s

first-place showdown with Estancia.

Daley tied for ninth

* GOLF: Newport Beach resident Pete Daley finished in a three-way

tie for ninth in the 27th annual Southern California Golf Association

Senior Amateur championship, which concluded Wednesday at the

Wilshire Country Club.

Daley, a Mesa Verde Country Club member, finished 8-over-par

(77-73 -- 150) in the 36-hole championship. Placentia’s Steve Bogan

(68-72 -- 140) won the tournament by four strokes over Encino

resident Paul Kay and Steve Yavorsky, from Capistrano Beach.
