Cal rolls over UCI in Hawaii

The Cal women’s volleyball team has been feast or famine all season

and the Golden Bears feasted on UC Irvine Sunday, posting a 30-24,

30-23, 30-27 victory to wrap up the Waikiki Beach Marriott

invitational.

Cal, ranked No. 14, which swept its first four opponents, before

being swept by its next three, improved to 5-3 with Sunday’s sweep at

the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

UCI (7-2), meanwhile, has now dropped two straight after matching

the 1981 Anteaters for the program’s best start.

Coach Charlie Brande’s Anteaters were led by 6-foot junior outside

hitter Whitney Pavlik’s 14 kills.

All-tournament selection Amanda Vazquez, a 6-1 junior middle

blocker playing in her home town, added eight kills and three total

blocks.

Senior setter Ashlie Hain, who also represented UCI on the

all-tournament team, had 27 assists and a team-high eight digs.

Angie Pressey paced the Golden Bears with 18 kills, while Alicia

Powers and Jenna Brown added 11 and 10, respectively.

Libero Jillian Davis totaled a match-high 17 digs while setter

Samantha Carter put up 47 assists for Cal.

UCI opens Big West Conference play Thursday at Cal State

Northridge.
