UC Irvine adds man
bullish on Brahms
Brahms scholar and musicologist David Brodbeck will serve as chair
of UC Irvine’s department of music, school officials announced last
week.
Brodbeck comes to UCI from the University of Pittsburgh, where he
served as a professor and a former department chair.
Brodbeck has training in music, primarily in composition. His
research on 19th century German music is widely published, with
articles on composers ranging from Beethoven to Mahler and genres
ranging from string quartet and symphony to sacred choral and dance
music. A former president of the American Brahms Society, Brodbeck is
writing a biography of Brahms.
Brodbeck is also examining works by post-war American and British
popular musicians, including the Beatles and the Beach Boys, as well
as the history of rock ‘n’ roll.
Brodbeck replaces professors Alan Terricciano and Cameron Harvey,
chair of dance and chair of drama, respectively, who served as
co-chairs of the music department while it underwent an
administrative reorganization.

suggests projects and discusses social issues; and the redevelopment
and residential rehabilitation committee, which promotes housing
redevelopment.

Library foundation
gets hefty check
The Audrey Steele Burnand Foundation has given the Newport Beach
Public Library Foundation an unrestricted check for $250,000. Burnand
is the daughter of Harry and Grace Steele, who donated $100,000 to
start the business collection.
The new funds will be used to purchase equipment and furniture and
develop the library’s book collection in selected areas. A portion of
the funds will also be used to buy new tables, chairs and equipment
to support the foundation and library events.
Armstrong awarded
for superior design
The Costa Mesa Planning Commission honored the Armstrong Garden
Center with its July 2004 design award. The center is at the
southwest corner of Newport Boulevard and Victoria Street.
The project was recognized because of its architectural features
and attractiveness due to the significant quantity of landscape
materials. It was also honored for being redeveloped quickly with
hardly any disruption.
The design awards program recognizes exceptional public and
private projects that exhibit excellence in community planning and
design.
