* Costa Mesa’s John Robison and Newport Beach’s John Van Vlear have
each qualified for the Southern California Golf Association’s amateur
net championship after placing in the top two in their respective
divisions.
Robison shot 76 with a course handicap of 5 for a net 1-under-par
71 at the 6,215-yard Via Verde Country Club April 8 in San Dimas,
finishing one stroke ahead Steven Richter of Thousand Oaks in the
President Flight. He tallied five birdies and finished the round with
four consecutive 4s (five pars and a birdie on No. 18). Robison
carded an even-par 36 gross on the back nine.
Van Vlear shot 80 with a 14 handicap for a 66 to top the Secretary
Flight April 13 at the 6,294-yard SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta, one
of nine qualifying sites for the SCGA net championship April 26-27 at
both Landmark Golf Club in Indio and Oak Quarry Golf Club in
Riverside. Van Vlear shot a 2-over-par 38 gross on the back nine.
Newport Beach’s Robert Lincoln is an alternate for the championship.
* Newport Beach Country Club will be the site for two charity
tournaments in May.
On May 24, the Wellness Community of Orange County, a nonprofit
organization that provides support, education and hope to cancer
patients and their families, will hold its second annual golf
tournament at NBCC.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. and golfers will be provided lunch.
A shotgun start follows at 11 a.m. and the day will end with a
no-host social hour in the clubhouse, dinner, awards ceremony, raffle
drawing along with silent and live auctions.

A week earlier on May 17, the fourth annual UCLA Orange Country
Golf Classic will be held. The tournament raises scholarship funds
for local students attending UCLA.
Registration begins at 10 a.m. followed by a noon shotgun start.
Golfers will play an 18-hole scramble with two divisions: gross and
Callaway. Cost per player of $200 includes golf, tee package, prize
drawing, contests, lunch, silent auction, dinner and program. Those
choosing to attend the dinner only can pay $50. Call (800) 825-2586
