Tillers rally past Newport Harbor
The beginning appeared quite promising for the Newport Harbor High
baseball team, which opened its season in a pool-play game of the
Newport Elks tournament against Tustin at the Sailors’ field Friday.
Senior Brandon Jasper smacked a two-out home run to center field
in the first inning and the Sailors scored two more runs in the
second inning. They led, 3-0, through four innings.
However, Tustin came alive with a five-run fifth and held off
Newport for an 8-5 victory. The Sailors had the bases loaded with one
out in the bottom of the seventh inning and their fourth and fifth
batters in the lineup coming to the plate. But the Tillers collected
two strikeouts to turn away Newport’s rally.
Jasper went 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Junior Taylor
Young was 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI and Jeff Sanchez also
had a 2-for-3 performance that came with an RBI.
“[Tustin] just strung together some hits in the fifth,” Newport
Coach Joel Desguin said. “We just couldn’t get the big hit.”
The Sailors had six runners left on base. They collected nine
hits, while Tustin had 12. Newport starter Joey Cantarella struck out
five and allowed eight hits and five runs, one unearned.
Newport returns to tournament action today, hosting Los Amigos at
10 a.m.
CdM shuts out Mission
* Senior Josh Bradbury homered and junior Wess Presson smacked a
two-run blast to help lead the Corona del Mar High baseball team to a
3-0 win over Mission Viejo in pool play of the Newport Elks
tournament at the Sea Kings’ field Friday.
Corona del Mar, in its season opener, also received a gem from
senior pitcher Todd Macklin, whose complete game included eight
strikeouts, two walks and three hits.
In the seventh inning, he helped himself get out of a jam by
turning a double play when Mission Viejo had runners on first and
second with no outs.
Macklin grabbed a line drive and threw the runner out at first
with a dart to Blake Contant.
Corona del Mar senior Barrett Sprowl had two doubles including one
in the sixth inning when the Sea Kings scored three runs. Bradbury
led off the inning with a home run over the fence in right-center
field that chased Mission Viejo starter Steve Grove.
Sprowl followed with a double and Presson brought him home with
his two-run bomb past the left-field fence.
The Sea Kings continue tourney action today at 2 p.m., playing
against Valencia in Placentia.
Lancers nip Mustangs
* Orange Lutheran High senior Ryan Shopshire tossed a
complete-game one-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory over visiting Costa
Mesa to begin play in the season-opening Newport Elks baseball
tournament at Orange’s Hart Park Friday night. Shopshire struck out
12 and walked just two in recording his first win.
Bobby Wooldridge drove in the game’s lone run with a single
through the hole at short in the third inning.
Alex Pisarski singled sharply to right field for Mesa’s only hit.
Mesa starter Justin Peterson was equally as dominant, holding the
Lancers to three hits in six innings while striking out four with two
walks.
Junior shortstop Dylan Hunter helped turn a double play after
snaring a line drive.
The Mustangs host Magnolia at 2 p.m. today.
Schaeffer quiets Eagles
* Garden Grove High right-hander Dana Schaeffer struck out eight
in a complete-game three-hitter to give his team a 5-1 season-opening victory over the visiting Estancia baseball team Friday to begin pool
play in the Newport Elks Tournament.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on senior Jeremy
Hauser’s triple to bring in Cullen Crom, but Schaeffer settled down
after that and retired the final 10 hitters he faced.
Garden Grove took the lead for good in the fourth, scoring their
first two runs following two of Estancia’s three errors.
Senior Brad Young struck out three in six innings. Two of Garden
Grove’s five runs were unearned.
Crom went 2 for 3 while Hauser was 1 for 3.
The Eagles host Century at 10 a.m. today in the second of three
pool-play tournament games.
