Buddhist leader coming to Irvine next month
The Dalai Lama will visit UC Irvine April 16 to discuss ethics in
the new millennium.
The 14th Dalai Lama, a spiritual leader of Buddhism, received the
Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
His visit will focus on personal responsibility and ethical
leadership. Local college students as well as middle and high school
students will participate in a morning dialogue from 9:30 to 11:30
a.m.
A public presentation on self-awareness and personal
transformation will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
The Dalai Lama Foundation will continue the morning student
dialogue with an online conversation including a Weblog.
As a spiritual leader and advocate of peace, the Dalai Lama has
traveled to more than 52 countries.

Authority on teen behavior to speak
Michael Bradley, a recognized specialist in adolescent behavior
and grief counseling, will speak to parents March 11 at Ensign Middle
School’s cafeteria from 7 to 9 p.m.
Bradley has counseled adolescents and parents for nearly 30 years
and appeared on more than 200 radio and television shows, including
“The Today Show.” His book, “Yes, Your Teen Is Crazy -- Loving Your
Kid Without Losing Your Mind,” has won three top literary awards,
including the 2002 Parents’ Choice Award and the 2002 Seal of
Approval from the National Parenting Center.
He will discuss practical advice on ways to successfully steer
children through the teenage years and explain the growth and
rewiring their brains are going through, which sometimes results in
unpredictable behavior.
The event is free to the public.
Teenage diabetes activist awarded
Brittany Rausch, 17, was honored Monday as Costa Mesa’s March
recipient of the Mayor’s Award program.
Rausch is the founder of the Pump Girls, a singing and dancing
group of teenage girls living with insulin pumps to treat their
juvenile diabetes. Soon after the group was formed, it signed a
record contract and recorded a CD to raise funds for young people
with diabetes who can’t afford insulin pumps.
Local sales rep cracks top 10 in West
Northwestern Mutual Financial Network recently named Ira Hermann
of the Newport Beach office of the Waltos Group a top-10 sales award
winner for 2003 in the western region.
Hermann was one of 1,200 sales representatives participating in
the annual sales contest for Northwestern Mutual Financial Network,
which offers guidance on insurance, retirement planning and other
financial investments.
