Police investigating vehicular assault
A traffic collision that occurred during a “road rage” report is
being investigated by police as an assault with a deadly weapon.
At about 9:11 p.m. Saturday, a 24-year-old Sunset Beach woman
reported that her car was intentionally rammed from behind by the
driver of a gray, older model Acura Legend.
Police would not release the name of the victim to protect her
safety.
Sgt. Dave Bunetta said the woman was driving north on Pacific
Coast Highway toward Seal Beach at the time of the crash. He said the
woman told police that the Acura was being driven aggressively near
the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Goldenwest Street.
She told police that she honked her horn after the Acura swerved
in front of her. The driver later ended up behind her car before
rear-ending it, Bunetta said.
“[The suspect] pushed her car for several seconds, and that’s why
she thought it was intentional,” Bunetta said.
Police are investigating the crash as an assault with a deadly
weapon because a car is legally considered a weapon when used to
intentionally cause a collision.
The victim gave police the Acura’s license plate number, Bunetta
said, and detectives are following up on the registered owner of the
car.
The victim called 911 and drove to a Seal Beach police station
after the incident, Bunetta said.
“If you know where a police department is, definitely do that,
pull into the parking lot,” he said.
