INSIDE THE DISTRICT
Here are some decisions from Tuesday night’s Newport-Mesa Unified
School District meeting.
ADDITIONS TO COURSE OF STUDY
A life skills class will be added to the high school course of
study. This item was held over from the previous meeting.
WHAT IT MEANS
Life skills is a home economics core class for freshmen. It will
cover nutrition and health, child development, food preparation and
clothing construction. Students will work with the Food Guide
Pyramid, learn food preparation, work on communication skills and
study child development and clothes construction.
RULES FOR PARENT INVOLVEMENT
By law, the district is required to have a parent involvement
policy that meets the requirements of the federal No Child Left
Behind act and Title I.
WHAT IT MEANS
After a team of inspectors from the state visited in November,
they recommended that the district revise its rule and regulation on
parent involvement. In the regulation, parent involvement is
described as ways parents can support their children to get the most
out of their education. The recommended revision states that the
superintendent will support school staff members to encourage parent
involvement in a variety of ways, including helping them develop
parenting skills and providing supportive home environments. This is
the second reading of the revision.
