Corona del Mar wins PCL crown

Senior Katya Eadington scored four goals to help lead the Corona del
Mar High girls water polo team to a 9-4 win over Pacific Coast League
host University Wednesday.
The victory capped an undefeated PCL season (4-0) and the league
title for the Sea Kings (16-9), the defending CIF Southern Section
Division II champions.
Junior Katlin Kubas added three goals for Corona del Mar, while
Vivian Liao and Jordan Anae scored one goal each. Sea King junior
goalie Brittany Fullen recorded 12 saves.
Corona del Mar’s junior varsity team also won, 7-5, and the
frosh-soph squad earned an 11-1 victory over the Trojans.

Mustangs win league title
* WATER POLO: Sarah Bowman scored three goals and Costa Mesa
High’s girls water polo wrapped up the Golden West League title,
finishing an undefeated league campaign with an 8-1 victory over
Santa Ana.
Jessica Steenhard and Christine Twohig each added two goals and
Quyen Nguyen came up with eight saves for the Mustangs, who finished
league play 6-0 and won their first outright league title in the
program’s history. Last year, Costa Mesa was a tri-champion.

UCI travels to Fullerton
* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine men’s basketball team will try to snap
its five-game losing streak against the team it earned its last
victory, when the Anteaters visit Cal State Fullerton tonight at 7:05
for a Big West Conference game at Titan Gym.
UCI (9-11, 4-7 in conference) is tied for sixth in the Big West,
while Fullerton (7-12, 3-7) is tied for eighth, one-half game ahead
of last-place Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
UCI, which defeated the Titans, 74-67, Jan. 17 at UCI, is 1-6 in
road games this season. The ‘Eaters have averaged just 50.8 points
and shot just 38.8% from the field in their last four games.
Tonight’s clash pits 7-foot UCI senior center Adam Parada (12.4
points and 6.9 rebounds per game) against 6-10 senior Pape Sow (17.3
ppg, 9.7 rpg).
UCI is also on the road Saturday, when it meets UC Riverside at
3:05 p.m. in a game televised on Fox Sports Net 2.

Gabert in Olympic trials
* SWIMMING: Stephanie Gabert, a Corona del Mar High freshman,
qualified for the Olympic trials by four-hundredths of a second, as
she finished 21st with a 2:35.94 time in the 200 meter breaststroke
at the Spring National Championships in Orlando, Fla. Wednesday.
Gabert, swimming for the Irvine Aquazots club, came in with a
seeded time of 2:37.61. The qualification time for the Olympic trials
is 2:35.99.
Gabert, who will swim for the Sea Kings this spring, will compete
in the 100 breaststroke Friday.

Mesa dominates Lions
* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys basketball team had all its
players score, including a career-high 11 points from senior David
Gandia, as the Mustangs trounced Golden West League visitor
Westminster, 78-31, Wednesday.
Jeff Waldron led the Mustangs (16-9, 7-4 in league) with 23 points
and 18 rebounds. Junior Duaine Wase contributed seven assists and
junior Brandon Aleson had six rebounds in Costa Mesa’s last home game
of the regular season.
The Mustangs held the Lions (2-9 in league) to single-digit
scoring in each of the first three quarters to earn a 51-15
advantage.

OCC sweeps Biola
* VOLLEYBALL: Sophomore outside hitter Poyer Poia led a balanced
Orange Coast College offensive attack with eight kills to go along
with three blocks, as the Pirates’ men’s volleyball squad knocked off
Biola University’s club team, 30-20, 30-25, 30-21 Wednesday.
Jon Larson added six kills and four blocks for OCC (3-0), while
Uriah Seui and Joe Arnold combined for eight kills and 10 blocks.
Sage Hill ends with win
* BASKETBALL: Junior Katie Puishys scored a game-high 19 points to
go with 12 rebounds, two steals and two blocks, helping lead the Sage
Hill School girls basketball team to a 49-40 season-ending win over
Academy League host Oxford Academy Wednesday.
Sophomore Haywood Wright added 13 points, 12 rebounds, five
assists, five blocks and three steals for the Lightning (10-10, 5-5
in league).

Bucs shut out Pierce
* SOFTBALL: Sophomore right-handed pitcher Olivia Bell scattered
five hits and, along with Yvonne Diaz’s scoreless inning, led the
Orange Coast College softball team to a 2-0 nonconference victory
over visiting L.A. Pierce Wednesday.
Jessica Wardle had the only RBI for OCC (5-2), which scored its
other run on an error. Diaz picked up the save with a no-hit inning
in the seventh.

Warriors ease past Tars
* BASKETBALL: Newport Harbor High junior Taylor Young matched
David Burgess with 18 points, but host Woodbridge had a better
supporting cast and prevailed, 75-44, to cap an undefeated Sea View
League boys basketball season Wednesday night.
Woodbridge led, 21-6, at the end of one quarter and pulled away
from there.
Senior Chad MacBeth scored six points, blocked four shots and
grabbed seven rebounds, while holding Burgess, bound for Brigham
Young University, to his season average in points.
Alex Orth and Rafael Mouradyan each scored five points for Newport
(14-11, 5-5 in league), which finished third in league and will know
of its seeding for the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs
when pairings are announced Sunday.

Eagles lose in overtime
* BASKETBALL: The Estancia High boys basketball team came from
behind in the fourth quarter, but host Orange tied the score with two
seconds left and outscored the Eagles, 9-3, in overtime for a 66-60
Golden West League victory Wednesday.
Carlos Pinto, who led the Eagles (13-13, 5-7 in league) with 23
points hit two free throws with 20 seconds left in regulation to give
Estancia a 57-55 lead. But Orange’s Brandon Palmer nailed an
off-balanced shot from about 15 feet out with two seconds remaining,
sending the game to overtime.
Estancia was 17 for 28 from the free-throw line (60.7%).

Coast avoids shutout
* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team earned just
one doubles win and lost, 8-1, to nonconference host and defending
state champion Grossmont Wednesday.
Kai Moriyama and Thao Ho teamed up for the Pirates’ lone victory,
winning 9-8, 7-3 in the tiebreaker.
OCC, which was without top players Leah Becker and Leanna Burmood,
dropped to 1-1, while Grossmont improved to 2-0.

Lions sweep Alliant
* TENNIS: The Vanguard University men’s and women’s tennis teams
earned sound victories over Alliant, in nonconference action
Wednesday.
The Vanguard men (3-0), led by Deiter Weislmair’s 4-6, 6-2, 6-2
victory, defeated Alliant, 9-0, while the Lions’ women’s team earned
an 8-1 win in its season opener.
