Mustangs perfect in Golden West League again

Costa Mesa High’s girls soccer team capped its second consecutive
undefeated Golden West League season with a 4-0 triumph over host
Westminster Tuesday.
The Mustangs (15-5, 12-0 in league), ranked sixth in CIF Southern
Section Division IV, received two goals from junior Nilani Duarte
along with one each from Jasmin Day and Kara Jenkins.
Mesa, which earned a share of the Division III crown last year,
has outscored league foes, 124-3, in two years.
Brittney Banning and Kyla Flores each had an assist while Kindra
Bailey made two saves in goal. Jenkins scored the final goal on a
45-yard free kick.
CIF playoff seedings will be announced Monday.
Werblin powers Sage
* SOCCER: Junior Amy Werblin scored four goals while Ali
McLaughlin added one to maintain the Sage Hill School girls soccer
team’s third-place Academy League standing Tuesday after a 5-0
victory over visiting Whitney.
Freshman Emily Webb and Desiree Carver-Thomas each tallied one
assist while Laura Gordon (three saves) and Kendra Bostwick (one
save) each guarded the goal for the Lightning (8-6-2, 4-4-1 in
league), who are in a battle with Brethren Christian for third place
in league and a guaranteed spot in the CIF playoffs, Sage Hill Coach
Amy Ray said.
Sage Hill hosts Oxford (6-2 in league before Tuesday), to conclude
league play at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
Waves edge ‘Eaters
* BASEBALL: The would-be tying run was thrown out at the plate
trying to score from second on a wild pitch for the final out as the
UC Irvine baseball team opened its season with an 8-7 nonconference
loss Tuesday at Pepperdine.
UCI sophomore Matt Anderson went 4 for 5 with three RBIs,
including a solo home run, to lead the Anteaters.
Jordan Szabo went 3 for 5 and starter Chris Nicoll fanned seven in
five innings, allowing only one run for UCI.

OCC beats SD Mesa
* BASEBALL: Freshman Daniel Sokarda nailed his first home run of
the season, a three-run shot to help lead the Orange Coast College
baseball team to an 8-7 nonconference victory over host San Diego
Mesa Tuesday.
Sokarda’s home run gave OCC (3-1) a 7-4 lead in the fifth inning.
Jose Casteneda earned an RBI single in the top of the eighth for the
Pirates. The Olympians nearly came back with three runs in the bottom
of the frame.
OCC freshman Matt Cline went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and
three stolen bases, and fellow freshman Ryan Clear picked up the save
when he relieved Josh Gagne in the eighth. Freshman pitcher Steven
Johns collected his first win of the season.

Milder scores hat trick
* SOCCER: Sophomore forward Zack Milder scored three goals to lead
the host Sage Hill School boys soccer team to a 7-0 Academy League
victory over Whitney Tuesday.
Defender Jordan Salinger added two goals while Braden Ross and
Julian Smith-Newman each added one apiece for the Lightning (10-5,
8-1 in league), who entered Tuesday tied with St. Margaret’s for the
league lead.
Smith-Newman added two assists while Milder and Ross each added
one.
Goalkeeper Cesar Arriaga made four saves for Sage Hill, which
faces host Oxford to close out league play at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
VU swept at home
* SOFTBALL: Freshman Catherine Buttrey hammered two home runs and
collected four RBI, but the Vanguard University softball team was
swept in its nonconference doubleheader against visiting Cal State
Bakersfield Tuesday.
Buttrey’s first home run was a three-run shot in the third inning
that pulled the Lions (4-4) to within, 6-4. But the Roadrunners (7-1)
outscored Vanguard, 3-0, over the final four innings and won, 9-4.
Buttrey, who plays third base, had her other home run in the
fourth inning of the nightcap that was called after five innings
because of darkness, as Bakersfield won, 8-1.
