Corona del Mar polo posts pair of 10s

The Corona del Mar High girls water polo team scored 10 goals in each
of its two victories in the first day of the Irvine Southern
California championships Thursday at CdM.
The Sea Kings (14-7) defeated Esperanza, 10-1, in their first game
of pool play and then knocked off Arlington of Riverside, 10-3, to
advance to today’s quarterfinals. CdM will take on Long Beach Wilson
today at 6 p.m. at the Sea Kings’ pool.
Senior Katya Eadington led CdM with seven goals, two against
Esperanza and five against Arlington. Senior Vivian Liao scored two
goals in each victory, while Camille Hewko (three goals), Ashley
Chandler (two), Jordan Anae (one), Amy Strack (one), Katie Indvik
(one) and Katlin Kubas (one) contributed in both wins.
Goalie Brittany Fullen recorded five saves in each game.
Tars cruise to victories
* WATER POLO: Carolyn Conway scored eight goals in two games as
the Newport Harbor High girls water polo team easily won its two
games of pool play in the Irvine Southern California championships
Thursday in the Sailors’ pool.
Conway scored four goals, as did Leah Robertson in Newport’s 18-1
victory over Long Beach Poly to open tourney play. Conway added four
more goals and Anne Belden matched that in leading the Sailors to an
11-3 win over Long Beach Millikan that advanced Newport (19-2) to the
quarterfinals, in which the Tars will face Coronado today at 6 p.m.
at Newport Harbor.
Kally Lucas scored three goals and had six steals in the Sailors’
first win, which also included goals from Belden (two), Ashling
Taylor (two), Melissa Wheeler (one), Jessica Ball (one) and Sabrina
Cook (one). Ball scored two goals and Wheeler added one against
Millikan.
Goalies Terin Cottam and Kim Housepian recorded seven and five
saves, respectively, in the two games.
Estancia handles Saints
* BASKETBALL: Carlos Pinto, Scott Sankey and Mike McDaniels each
scored in double figures to lead the Estancia High boys basketball
team to a 58-41 Golden West League victory over visiting Santa Ana
Thursday.
Pinto led the Eagles (12-12, 4-6 in league) with 15 points, while Sankey added 14 and McDaniels 10. Sankey grabbed nine rebounds and
Hugo Escobedo contributed seven points, seven rebounds and five
assists.

Mesa in win column
* SOCCER: Costa Mesa High’s boys soccer team got its first win in
nearly two years Thursday with a 3-2 Golden West League victory over
host Orange.
Senior Barnade Ortega scored two goals while Jose Perez added the
game-winner in the 55th minute to give Mesa a 3-1 lead it would hold
for its first Golden West League win since joining the circuit last
season.
The Mustangs’ last victory came Feb. 15, 2002, when they defeated
Pacifica, 3-0, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section
Division IV playoffs.
Eric Vargas made four saves for Mesa (1-16, 1-10 in league), which
received strong defense from Edgar Ochoa.
Sailors edge Hawks
* BASKETBALL: Junior Vanessa Miller scored a game-high 20 points
and knocked down a key three-pointer with about a minute left to lead
the Newport Harbor High girls basketball team to a 49-46 Sea View
League victory over visiting Laguna Hills Thursday.
The Hawks led, 46-45, before Miller hit her fourth three-pointer.
Senior Jillianne Whitfield, who contributed 15 points and 14 rebounds, later hit a free throw for the Sailors’ final point.
Whitfield was 9 for 10 from the free-throw line, while Miller
connected on four of her nine three-pointers for Newport (13-11, 4-5
in league).

Tars earn 2nd league win
* SOCCER: The Newport Harbor High girls soccer team scored three
unanswered goals and defeated visiting Laguna Hills, 3-1, in a Sea
View League game Thursday.
The Hawks scored three minutes into the game before Senior Stacy
Allee tallied Newport’s first goal in the 39th minute, converting a
deflected pass into the net.
Krystal Wright scored the deciding goal on a penalty kick in the
44th minute and junior Tayler Giacomaro laced a shot from 26 yards
out to cap the scoring in the 70th minute.
Kara DeMille made three saves in the first half for Newport
(3-15-3, 2-5-2 in league) while Mary Giberson took over in the second
half and stopped two shots.
Coast wins opener
* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team opened its
season with a 9-0 nonconference win over visiting San Diego Mesa
Thursday.
Leanna Burmood, Leah Becker, Sabrina Tanamal and Darlene Tran each
won two sets in singles while Kai Moriyama and Thao Ho both won by
default.
Castaneda hot for OCC
* BASEBALL: Sophomore outfielder Jose Castaneda went 4 for 5 with
three doubles, three runs scored and four RBIs to lead the Orange
Coast College baseball team to a 13-5 win over visiting Chaffey in
the Matt O’Brien Memorial tournament Thursday.
Keith Mastel added two hits and scored twice to go with his one
RBI, while Anthony Duarte contributed a double and three runs scored
for the Pirates (1-1).

Calvary rallies past CdM
* BASKETBALL: Chelsea Deluca scored a game-high 22 points while
Kristin Moore tallied 10 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter as
the visiting Calvary Chapel High (Santa Ana) girls basketball team
defeated Corona del Mar, 50-44, in a Pacific Coast League game
Thursday.
Sophomore Katie Schulte came off the bench to lead CdM (7-15, 2-7
in league) with eight points while Kelly Kawata and Megan Benbow each
added seven points. Sarah Stern added six points to go with five
points from Colleen Marks.
Kate Heeschen scored four points to go with five rebounds, four
assists and four steals.

Palomar silences Coast
* TENNIS: Orange Coast College’s men’s tennis team fell to host
Palomar, 9-0, in a nonconference match Thursday.
Mike Hoevel (Newport Harbor High) lost to a Palomar opponent, 7-5,
6-3, while Scott Fielder lost his two sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Colin Duncan (Newport Harbor) lost two sets, 6-3, 6-3, while Mike
Manus fell at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
UCI downed in Stockton
* BASKETBALL: Senior Kristen Green scored a career-high 27 points,
but the UC Irvine women’s basketball team lost, 72-66, to Big West
Conference host University of the Pacific Thursday.
Green was 5 of 10 from three-point range. Lauren Yadon added 11
points for the Anteaters (3-15, 2-8 in conference). Corinne Wong led
the Tigers (9-10, 8-2) with 19 points.

Sailors to host tourney
* LACROSSE: The Newport Harbor lacrosse parent boosters will host
a tournament a barbecue at Newport Harbor High Saturday, with four
games scheduled, beginning at 9 a.m.
The schedule includes Newport Harbor junior high boys vs. Corona
del Mar (9 a.m.), Newport Harbor youth girls vs. Tustin (10:30 a.m.),
Newport Harbor youth boys No. 1 vs. Seal Beach (Noon) and Newport
Harbor youth boys No. 2 vs. St. Margaret’s (1:30 p.m.).
