Newport Harbor emerges victorious on road in season opener

Sophomore Dennis Heenan hit three three-pointers in the first half,

including a three-quarters of the court shot as time expired in the

second period, as Newport Harbor High built a double-digit halftime

lead and cruised to a 72-40 victory over Loma Linda Academy in its

boys basketball season opener Tuesday.

Jamie Diefenbach led the Sailors with 14 points and 11 rebounds

while also helping limit Loma Linda’s 7-foot-1 center to one point.

Heenan added 11 points, Rafael Mouradyan chipped in with 10 and Ricky

Green scored seven and pulled down seven rebounds. Newport returns to

the court Friday for a home game against Back Bay rival CdM at 7 p.m.

Lions roar against Biola

* BASKETBALL: Vanguard University remained undefeated with an

89-37 women’s basketball road victory over Biola in its conference

opener Tuesday.

The Lions (4-0) shot better than 57% and had no trouble

dispatching Biola (3-3). Lacey Mills led Vanguard with 30 points,

making eight of 11 three-pointers. Kelly Schmidt added 24 points and

10 rebounds, while Lisa Faulkner had seven points and 10 assists.

UCI can’t secure win

* BASKETBALL: UC Irvine’s women’s basketball team held a

five-point halftime lead but couldn’t come away with its first

victory of the season, falling to San Diego State, 51-40.

The Aztecs (3-1) outscored the Anteaters (0-3) 32-16 in the second half as UCI made just seven of 26 shots (26.9%).

Cristina Callaway led the ‘Eaters with 14 points. Kristen Green

added six points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Sage Hill edged

* WATER POLO: Hayden Hutchison, the lone senior on the Sage Hill

School girls water polo team, scored four goals, but the Lightning

lost, 9-7, to Rancho Alamitos in nonleague action at Corona del Mar

High Tuesday.

Devin Tooma added three goals for the Lightning (1-1), while

Katherine Bishop recorded six saves.

Lightning win again

* BASKETBALL: Sage Hill School earned a 49-36 nonleague boys

basketball victory over visiting Rio Contiguo Tuesday.

Kevin Joyce led the Lightning (2-0) with 19 points, while Matt

Loper and Alex Samel were also in double figures with 15 and 10

points scored, respectively.
