Church to help homeless

While the Society of St. Vincent de Paul usually doesn’t open its

doors to the homeless until Dec. 1, this year it is starting early

with the help of a local church.

Tonight, the Crossing Church in Costa Mesa will take part in the

Emergency Cold Weather Shelter Program as an alternate site since the

National Guard Armory in Santa Ana won’t be available until Dec. 3.

The Crossing Church will host the homeless through Friday in lieu

of the Santa Ana Armory. The Good Samaritan Church in Westminster

will serve as a shelter from Saturday until the following Tuesday.

The Fullerton Armory will be available for the entire duration of the

program.

The society wanted to start the program early this year due to the

cold weather, the high demand and the need, program director Scott

Mather said. It was able to do so because it raised some additional

funds, and because churches like The Crossing offered their

hospitality, Mather added.

“We were desperately looking for somewhere and The Crossing kindly

stepped up and said we could use their site,” Mather said.

The society uses buses to pick up the homeless at various

locations. For the Santa Ana Armory the bus stops at two spots in

Santa Ana. They get dropped off at the shelters in the evening and

are picked up in the morning. While they are at the armory, they

receive a hot meal and can get information from various medical and

service organizations.
