Sea Queens clamp down

The Sea Queens went through an undefeated season while allowing just

one goal -- in their first game -- in AYSO Region 57 girls under-14

soccer action recently.

Rachel Pidgeon, Taylor Rhodes, Megan Barrett and Shay Whitaker

shut down the opposition along with goalkeeper Amy Youngman.

Chelsea Kring led the team in goals followed by Emily Spindler.

Rachel Hupp while Emily Carvelli had several assists.

Katie Hitch scored game-winning goals in the final two contests.

Jackie Crosson, Mackenna Ferguson and Melissa Manni controlled the

midfield with tenacious defense for the Sea Queens, which enter the

playoffs as the top seed.

In boys under-10 action:

* Blue Galaxy 5, Warriors 0:

The Galaxy opened the playoffs Nov. 6 with the shutout. They

jumped to a 4-0 halftime lead with help from Casey Worden and Jono

Keedy, who teamed to score three second-half goals.

Zach Davis opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a

20-yard strike on Colin Krum’s first of two assists.

Jonathan Harzon scored on a rebound from a shot by Jake Jones in

the second half.

Matthew Kernan and Ryan Pierce anchored a balanced defense in

front of Galaxy goalkeepers Jones, Worden and Tanner Grandstaff, who

made two key saves late in the game to preserve the shutout.

* Green Eagles 7, Sea Kings 0:

The Eagles used strong defense and aggressive offense to post the

shutout in the first round of the playoffs.

Forward Mading Jackson scored three goals while Blake Zimring

found the back of the net twice. William Lyle notched his first goal

of the season. Sweeper Daniel Anastos added a goal in the fourth

quarter.

Max Condon, Michael Robins and Louis Eisenberger led the defense

with strong goaltending from Matt Downing.

In girls under-10 play:

* The Red Tigers were led by two goals from Nikki Zak and one goal

from Alicia Afshar in a 3-0 victory.

Vanessa Skaggs and Savannah Thies each tallied an assist while

Kelsey Schmidt and Juliette Bioche made several saves in goal.

Julia Donnelly and Kristina Sparling turned away many opposition

attacks with help from Alexa Losey and Vanessa Grainger.

In girls under-6 action:

* The Blue Dolphins’ Shea Horvath, Kelly McFetters, Audrey Reed

and Haley Martinez each scored goals.

Horvath, McFetters, Naci Johnson, Reed and Martinez added solid

defense.

In Coast Soccer League play:

* Newport-Mesa Breakers 2, South County Storm 0:

The Breakers, a girls under-10 soccer team consisting of players

from Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, moved into a tie for first place

in the South Division with the win. They now are 28-1-1 on the

season.

Heather Flores broke the scoreless tie when she beat two defenders

and slotted a ball into the goal in the second half.

Anna Venturini followed with a second goal when she took a through

ball and powered a shot past the Storm goalkeeper.

Rachel Kerce, Claire Castillo and goalkeeper Lauren Terry shut

down the Storm offense.

Striker Sierra Gordon, along with midfielders Courtney McIntosh,

Josie Jogwe and Brooke Lux, added to the victory.

The Breakers now look to capture the league championship along

with the League Cup and California Youth Soccer Association State

Cup.
