Red-letter day for Black Mustangs

Black outlasts Green, 49-13.

That was the margin of victory for Costa Mesa Black Mustangs

against the Costa Mesa Green Mustangs in the first round of the Jr.

Pee Wee playoffs in Pop Warner football action Saturday.

The Green Mustangs (9-0) scored first when they recovered the

opening onside kick and drove 40 yards for the touchdown.

The Green Mustangs tried a similar play on the ensuing kickoff,

but the Black’s Parker Norton grabbed the ball and returned it 60

yards for the score. Graeme Frasier connected on the PAT to give the

Black an 8-6 lead.

Norton added an interception on the Green’s next drive and hit

Zack Porteous on a halfback pass for a for an apparent touchdown that

was called back due to an illegal block in the back.

But it didn’t matter, as Mark Contreras took the ball on a double

reverse and scored from 28 yards out for his 15th touchdown of the

season.

Michael Taormina jarred the ball loose on the next Green Drive and

Contreras scooped it up and returned it 40 yards for the TD.

Contreras added his third touchdown of the game on a 45-yard sweep

with lead blocking from Buzzy Yokoyama, Taormina, Dakota Gilbert,

Grant McKee, Dillon Miller, Frasier and Porteous.

Norton ran the ball to the Green 6-yard line with four seconds

left in the first half to set up history.

Frasier, who converted all five of his PAT’s, drilled a 26-yard

field goal from the left hash mark to give the Black a 35-13 lead,

but more importantly, it was the first field goal made at the Jr. Pee

Wee level.

Frasier continued his success in the second half, scoring a

58-yard TD to further his effort. He was named the game’s Most

Valuable Player.

Norton scored his 16th TD of the year on a 55-yard run to cap the

scoring.

Black’s defense, which includes Yokoyama, Taormina, Contreras,

Gilbert, Brandon Kelly, Tyler Henry, Norton, Spencer Dalby and Jack

Jeffries, has allowed just 21 points this season.

In Jr. Pee Wee action from Nov. 1:

* Black Mustangs 36, La Habra Blue Lions 2:

Norton scored touchdowns the first three times he touched the ball

in the Mustangs’ victory to end the regular season undefeated (8-0).

Norton was on the receiving end of a Taormina pass on the first

play of the game for a 60-yard touchdown.

His second and third touchdowns came on runs of 55 and 48 yards to

give him 138 yards on five carries.

Contreras went 65 yards for the Mustangs’ fourth score and McKee

carried the ball twice for 70 yards, adding the final score on a

57-yard TD run.

Kelly, Jeffries and Richie Lowery carried the ball well for the

Mustangs.

Gilbert, Frasier, Miller, Andrew Duhoux, Henry, Tory Morgan,

Porteous and McKee opened holes for Mustang running backs.

The Mustang defense received inspired play from Dalby, Tyler

Porteous, Matt Porteous and Patrick Shanklin.

In Pee Wee action:

* Costa Mesa Green Mustangs 33, Long Beach Blue Rams 6:

Frank DeNoewer scored three touchdowns, including one on the

opening kickoff. The other two came on runs of 66 and 42 yards. He

also added an interception.

Chris Gute added two touchdowns behind the blocking of a dominant

Mustang offensive line.

Daniel Derieg and Mike Kelly also ran the ball well with Todd

Davis and Jacob Folsom providing PATs.

Blake Davey blocked his third punt of the year while Brett

Farthing added an interception and Robbie Gemayal, Ben Ward,

Christian Argumedo, Jackson Carmack, Devin Anthony and Kelly played

tough defense.

The Mustangs head into the playoffs tied for second place.
