Corona del Mar rolls in tennis opener

Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team cruised to an easy
first-round victory in the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs,
knocking off Bishop Montgomery, the third-place entry from the Serra
League, 18-0, Thursday at home.
The Sea Kings (13-4), the No. 4 seed in Division I, won their 10th
consecutive match and shut out an opponent for the second time this
season.
They will face either San Clemente or El Modena Saturday in the
second round.
Senior Brittany Holland, the Pacific Coast League singles
champion, freshman Jill Damion and freshman Jillian Braverman all
swept their three singles matches.
Doubles teams of senior Jackie Manning and freshman Miranda Young,
as well as junior Jami Steele and freshman Hayley Young each won
three sets.
Senior Juliette Mutzke and sophomore Rachel Miller won two sets,
while freshman Michelle Atkins subbed for Mutzke and combined with
Miller for another victory.

Top-seeded Sage wins
* TENNIS: Sage Hill School, the No. 1 seed in the CIF Southern
Section Division V girls tennis playoffs, breezed past visiting
Baldwin Park in the first round Thursday, 17-1, at Park Newport.
The Lightning (16-3) won its 11th straight match as freshman
Stephanie Langer paced the Academy League champions with a golden
sweep, winning all 18 games at No. 2 singles.
Sage Hill advances to Saturday’s second round to meet Silverado at
a site to be determined by today’s coin flip.
Sage Coach A.G. Longoria also singled out the contribution made by
No. 1 doubles team Jessica Tsoong, a senior, and Sarah Flynn.
The duo won 18 of 19 sets to pace a nine-set doubles sweep for the
Lightning.
Baldwin Park, the third-place team from the Valle Vista League,
finished 12-10.

Mustangs bow out
* WATER POLO: Visiting Costa Mesa High was defeated, 14-5, by
Esperanza Thursday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section
Division II boys water polo playoffs.
Sophomore Kyle Thorsness scored four goals for the Mustangs
(15-8), who finished second in the Golden West League. Senior Brian
Knox added a goal, junior Evan Spencer had two assists and junior
goalie Matt Jaroslawski had seven saves for Mesa.
Esperanza, the No. 4 seed after finishing second in the Sunset
League, improved to 13-7.

Sailors handle T-wolves
* TENNIS: The host Newport Harbor High girls tennis team rode
doubles sweeps by A.J. Olson and Diana Khoury, as well as Carolyn
Hustedt and Carly Adams to defeat Northwood, 12-6, in the first round
of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs Thursday.
The Sailors (14-5) advance to meet Harvard-Westlake, at a site to
be determined by coin flip today, in Saturday’s second round, with
top-seeded Peninsula likely looming in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.
Olson and Khoury improved to 27-2 on the season, winning one set
in the tiebreaker to complete their sweep.
Sailors Coach Fletcher Olson praised the play of Hustedt and
Adams, who rallied to win a tiebreaker. Newport singles players
Vanessa Dunlap, Bonnie Adams and Chrissy Schwartz all won two sets to
help the Sailors advance.
Northwood, one of two at-large teams from the Pacific Coast
League, finishes 10-11.

Conway chooses Indiana
* WATER POLO: Carolyn Conway, a standout on the Newport Harbor
High girls water polo team, signed a letter of intent to play for the
University of Indiana.
Conway said she visited the Hoosiers in late September. She also
made recruiting trips to UC Berkeley and Arizona State.
“I just wanted to get out of California and try something new,”
Conway said. “I also liked the feel of the team. All the girls were
nice.”
Estancia advances
* TENNIS: Estancia High, champion of the Golden West League,
squeaked out a first-round victory in the CIF Southern Section
Division V girls tennis playoffs Thursday, defeating Magnolia, the
No. 3 entry from the Orange League, 10-8.
The Eagles (14-1) advance to Saturday’s second round where they
will play Linfield Christian, at a site to be determined today by a
coin flip.
With three matches remaining, the Estancia needed two victories.
They got them from freshman Sarah Stratton, who won, 6-1, in
singles, and the doubles duo of Asia Ingram and Heather Morton, who
produced a 6-3 victory.
Of Estancia’s 10 points, seven came in doubles, with senior Stacie
Nellor, sweeping three sets and winning 18 of 20 games.
Stratton and junior Yvonne Zaidler won two sets each.

Sage Hill School is seeking an athletic trainer to supervise the
training room and be on hand for home contests beginning with the
winter sports.
Hours will be Monday through Friday from 3 to 5 p.m.
