Newport tops Mater Dei in surfing, remains undefeated

The Newport Harbor High surf team put another ‘W’ in the win column
and have yet to touch the loss column as the Sailors defeated Mater
Dei to improve to 6-0 on the season Wednesday at Brookhurst Street in
Huntington Beach.
Newport scored 87 points out of a possible 105, taking 12 of the
21 top three positions in the seven heats. The Sailors won three of
the four events, earning victories in boys short board, boys long
board and body board.
Sophomores Luke Sequeira, Rob Delorme and Andrew Nahin each gained
a first-place finish in their respective heats in short board
competition.
Sophomore Daniel Matthews won the body board competition for the
Sailors, while freshman Tanner Prairie won the boys long board.
With Wednesday’s five first-place finishes, the Sailors have had
22 different surfers win a team heat this season. There are 39
surfers on the team.
The Sailors will face Calvary Chapel Nov. 13 at 6:15 a.m. at 56th
Street in Newport Beach.
Riverside blanks UCI
* SOCCER: The UC Irvine men’s soccer team had the same number of
shots as host UC Riverside, but the Highlanders were the ones who
found the back of the net, winning the Big West Conference game, 1-0,
Wednesday.
UCR’s Jordan Arias broke a scoreless tie in the 74th minute,
scoring on a free kick from 25 yards out. Anteater goalkeeper Cameron
Rossi had three saves UCI (6-10-3, 3-3-3 in conference), while
Highlander goalkeeper Josh Alexander recorded eight saves, earning
the shutout for UCR (7-10-1, 3-5-1).
UCI will close out the season Saturday, hosting the No. 15 UC
Santa Barbara Gauchos at 7 p.m.
OCC sweeps Riverside
* VOLLEYBALL: Christine Woller of Orange Coast College totaled 10
kills and teammate Donka Drozd added nine as the host Pirates easily
swept Riverside, 30-11, 30-9, 30-14, Wednesday in Orange Empire
Conference women’s action.
Amber McCarthy (25 assists), Melissa Sherman (12 digs) and Brenda
Bailey (three blocks) also paced OCC (15-2, 10-2 in the OEC and
ranked second in the state behind nemesis Golden West). Riverside
fell to 4-13, 2-11.
Won paces Anteaters
* GOLF: The UC Irvine women’s golf team finished 13th at the Las
Vegas Collegiate Shootout at the Anthem Country Club in Henderson,
Nevada.
Under cold and rainy conditions, the Anteaters shot 321 Wednesday
to end with a 54-hole total of 943.
UCI’s Angela Won, after shooting a career-low 69 on Tuesday,
finished with an 80 to place 35th at 230 (81-69-80). Minnie Choi,
Shelly Raworth, Karlie Ward and Reana Yun also scored.
UCI assistant honored
* BASKETBALL: UC Irvine assistant women’s basketball coach Kim
Lummus-Crabtree will be inducted into the Texas High School
Basketball Hall of Fame Saturday in Waco, Texas.
Lummus-Crabtree was a four-year starter at Cleburne High from
1991-95 and was a four-time all-district selection for Coach Judy
Brown-Mizell. While Lummus-Crabtree was at Cleburne, the team went
105-30 and won a state championship in 1995.
Her senior year, Lummus-Crabtree made every all-state team and was
the 4A Player of the Year, as well as MVP of the state tournament.
She was the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches free-throw
champion (83%) in 1993-94 and the three-point champion (114 of 220
for 52%) in 1994-95, making her the only player to ever win both
titles.
She received honorable mention for USA Today’s All-America
selections as a senior.
Lummus-Crabtree, in her fourth year as an assistant at UCI, went
on to play for the University of Texas from 1995-99.
