Bernstein wins finale

* DRAG RACING: Corona del Mar’s Kenny Bernstein won what could be

his final race Sunday, eclipsing Scott Kalitta in the top fuel final

at the NHRA Finals at Pomona Raceway.

Bernstein retired last season, allowing his son, Brandon, to take

over in the famous Budweiser King dragster. But after Brandon

suffered a season-ending injury in a crash earlier this season, Kenny

returned to driving duties.

He won four of his last five races, including Sunday’s final,

rewriting the finish to his career, which had included a first-round

loss in last year’s season-ending NHRA Finals.

Brandon will return to the driver’s seat for the 2004 season, with

Kenny expected to retire for a second time.

Pirates finish seventh

* SAILING: Orange Coast College finished seventh at the

Intercollegiate Sailing Association Sloop North American

Championships, completed Sunday in Throggs Neck, N.Y.

The Pirates, fourth after the first day of the two-day event,

earned 60 points. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy won the title with

28 points.

Day leads Mustangs

* SOCCER: Freshman Sharon Day, a Costa Mesa High product, led Cal

Poly San Luis Obispo to a 2-0 win over UC Santa Barbara in the title

game of the Big West Conference women’s soccer tournament Sunday at

UC Irvine.

Day, a forward, scored a goal and added an assist en route to

tournament MVP honors. Her heroics helped Cal Poly advance to the

NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.
