The Laguna Beach Soccer Club boys’ Under-10 Division team ran its
undefeated streak to three games with a 4-2 victory over the Mission
Viejo Soccer Club Blitzz in Coast Soccer League action.
The boys from Laguna came out strong from the start to take
control of the match.
Michael Kimball barely missed scoring on several early attacks on
goal, but Miguel Jaimes finally put Laguna on the scoreboard when he
took a pass from Kimball just outside the Mission Viejo 18-yard box
and sent a one-touch volley into the upper corner of the net.
Minutes later, forward Marc Hughes eluded several defenders and
beat the Mission Viejo goalie in a one-on-one situation. He sent a
quick flip off the inside off his foot, launching the ball into the
opposite corner of the goal for a 2-0 lead.
The defensive play of Paolo Noppenberger, Christian Menes and
Zachary Le Bon held Mission Viejo scoreless in the opening half.
But Mission Viejo quickly gained momentum at the outset of the
second half, using a goal by forward Morgan Leiter to pull to within
2-1.
They had a chance to tie the score at 2-2, but Laguna goalie
Austin Paxson blocked a penalty kick attempt.
Kimball gave momentum back to Laguna when he took a
near-impossible shot from 25 yards out and sent it into the net, for
a 3-1 advantage.
Late in the match, Logan Warren’s pass set up Hughes’ second goal
of the game.
Leiter scored a second time for Mission Viejo to make the final,
4-2.
Also contributing to the success of Coach Andy Thomas’ squad has
been the play of Brian Vail, Jimmy Kang and Derek Marolf at midfield,
and fullback Luke Barker.
