Sea Kings gain share of title

The Corona del Mar High boys water polo team became co-champion of

the Pacific Coast League by virtue of Laguna Beach’s 10-9 victory

over University Thursday and the Sea Kings’ 11-10 win over host University Wednesday.

CdM overcame an 8-5, third-quarter deficit and pulled out a

Pacific Coast League victory over Uni. Junior Bryan Buhagiar scored

the game-winning goal with 57 seconds left. Thomas Pearson led the

Sea Kings (6-18, 3-1 in league) with four goals, while Tom Money

scored three, Spencer Pirdy added two and Daniel Niehenke chipped in

one. Gaston Sanford recorded 11 saves for CdM.

Mesa dominates Lions

* Costa Mesa High finished second in the Golden West League,

defeating Westminster, 16-6, Thursday at Los Alamitos.

Sophomore Kyle Thorsness led the Mustangs (14-6, 5-1 in league)

with five goals, while junior Evan Spencer added four goals. Senior

Brian Knox scored three goals, and junior Anthony Adamowicz and

senior Brian Tipton contributed two each. Junior goalie Matt

Jaroslawski recorded seven saves.

Mesa will play in the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs,

most likely in a first-round game Thursday after seedings are

announced Monday. Westminster dropped to 9-7, 3-3.

Eagles finish with win

* Senior Paul Collier scored eight goals to lead Estancia to a

13-3 win over Golden West League visitor Orange Thursday.

Junior Richard McElveny added three goals and senior Nathan

Marsteller made nine saves to help the Eagles (9-11, 2-4 in league)

conclude their season on a winning note.

Sailors down Warriors

* Newport Harbor High wrapped up the regular season with a 15-5

Sea View League victory over Woodbridge Wednesday at Corona del Mar

High.

Senior Michael Bury led the Sailors (16-10, 4-1 in league) with

six goals while sophomore Clay Jorth added four goals. Bryan Auer,

and younger brother Brett Auer, along with Trevor Gregory, Telford

Cottam and Griffin Gentry scored one goal each.

Newport goalie Michael Robinson recorded seven saves.

The Sailors finished second in the Sea View League, behind

Foothill. The CIF Southern Section Division I playoff seedings will

be released Monday.

Newport Harbor’s junior varsity team won the Sea View League

championship, as they were undefeated.

They lost only one game during the season in the title match of

the San Clemente tournament.

The Sailors won the Irvine tournament and the Newport Harbor

tourney, as well.

Kenny Moad, Parker Gregory, Eric Carlson, Kyle Sherman, Hunter

Alvarado, James Jackson, Daniel Furman, and the goalie Evan McLain

helped lead the Sailors to the Sea View League junior varsity title.

Mater Dei fell to 12-6.

The Eagles conclude their season today at 3:15 p.m. against Golden

West League visitor Orange.
