Newport Harbor knocks off Foothill

The Newport Harbor High boys water polo team defeated Sea View League
rival Foothill, 9-8, Friday to advance to today’s semifinals of the
Tru-West Memorial Cup invitational in San Jose.
Senior Griffin Gentry scored three of the Sailors’ six second-half
goals and junior goalie Michael Robinson (six saves) stopped an
outside shot on the Knights’ final possession to preserve the win.
Morgan Laidlaw’s goal with 5:35 left in the game put the Sailors
ahead for good.
The victory avenged an 11-10 overtime loss to Foothill in an Oct.
8 league game at Corona del Mar High.
Newport Harbor is ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division I
and Foothill is No. 3
The Sailors (14-8), who also defeated Miramonte, 11-10, Friday,
play a semifinal opponent to be determined today at 1:40 p.m. at
Bellarmine High.

Sea Kings lose a pair
* The Corona del Mar High boys water polo team dropped two games,
losing to Bellarmine and Jesuit in the Tru-West Memorial Cup
invitational in San Jose Friday.
The Sea Kings (5-16) lost to Bellarmine, 8-6, and Jesuit 11-8.
Thomas Pearson led CdM with three goals in the loss to Bellarmine.
Results of the loss to Jesuit were not provided.
Corona will continue play in the 16-team tournament in consolation
action.
