Gildart hits mark for Jr. Seahawks

Jacob Gildart scored three rushing touchdowns to lead the

Newport-Mesa Jr. Midget Seahawks (12-13-year-olds) to a 28-12 victory

over host Huntington Beach in a Jr. All-American Football game Oct.

25 to finish the season undefeated.

Gildart scored on runs of 55, 47 and 39 yards to go with a 10-yard

touchdown by Erik Rask.

Justin Elbourn, Frankie Russo, Evan Livadas, Corbin McNutt, Robbie

Boyer, Steven Deverian Joshua Dill, Max Stiegler, Austin Raiger and

J.P. Gormly led the Seahawks’ offensive line.

Matt Garza and Taylor McSunas each added strong runs for Newport

while quarterback Matt Barkley completed a 35-yard pass to Carlo

Valdes to key the drive capped by Rask’s touchdown. Barkley kicked

three PATs.

John Heard and Tyler Harmon intercepted Huntington passes. Brett

Hanrahan, Kevin Morgenstern, Morgan Brombal, Alex Vollaire, Rask,

Gildart, Patrick Marin-Finn, Harmon and Heard led the defense.

Scott Chene, Travis Prickett, Kevin Rask, Ryan Lawler and James

McKennon added strong play.

In Jr. Clinic (7-8-year-olds) play:

* Newport 20, Huntington Beach 0:

The Seahawks set a Jr. Clinic record with their fifth victory this

season.

The Seahawks (5-3) limited the Dolphins to two first downs,

including one on the game’s last play.

Jeff Carlyle and J.C. Genova led the rushing attack with Aaron

Crosby, Levi Stillman and Korey Cablay all playing quarterback.

Cablay completed passes to Josh Rivera with the line of Taro

Doone, James Christian, Daniel Albert, Colbe Koste and Rocky Feinberg

providing protection.

Seahawk defender Chris Johnstone tackled a Dolphin rusher on a

reverse for the game’s final play and was helped by Rivera, Garret

Farthing, Kyle Benter and Cameron Davis. Crosby added several

unassisted tackles. James Barret, Marquise Broussard, Stephen Keenan

and Nic Landstrom stopped the Dolphin offense all game.

Cablay played well at safety while Levi Swoger had two tackles for

a loss with Tyler Rios adding an interception.

In Clinic (8-10-year-olds) play:

* Long Beach Poly 13, Seahawks 12: A quarterback sneak fell six inches short for the Seahawks in

their bid to knock off the first-place Jackrabbits.

Blair Luchs hit Michael Hyden for a 65-yard touchdown reception

with less than a minute to go before the aforementioned extra-point

attempt.

A 30-yard touchdown run by John Barton capped a 60-yard drive by

the Seahawks as they took a first-quarter lead.

Stephen Vayda ran the ball well for the Seahawks in the second

quarter.

Long Beach Poly tied the game late in the second quarter on a

60-yard TD catch on a third-and-15 play.

Long Beach would score the game-winning touchdown in the third

quarter, capitalizing on a Seahawk turnover.

The Seahawks, who finished 3-2, good for third place in the

Central division, were led on defense by Zack Beaudine, Kellon

Truxton, Jeffrey Condino, Justin Gildart, Aaron White, Matt Carlyle,

Chase Favreau, Luchs and Barton.

A.J. Swies, Mario Rosales, Trent Anderson, Kaden Stark, Louis

Sheldon, Joe Scrivner, Ian Klug, White, Hunter Molnar, Spencer

Schmider, Jake Hall and Caden Stark anchored the offensive line.

Newport plays host Compton to open the playoffs today.

In Pee Wee (11-12-year-olds) play:

* The Seahawks lost their last game of the regular season against

Huntington Beach despite two touchdowns from Michael Helfrich on runs

of 46 and 50 yards.

Helfrich took a handoff from quarterback Adrian Luchs and received

a block from receiver Jack Robison on the 35-yard touchdown to cut

the Dolphin lead to 13-6 late in the second quarter.

The Dolphins scored three unanswered touchdowns to put the game

out of reach.

William Ham returned a kickoff 35 yards before being tackled at

the 50. A few plays later, Helfrich took a handoff from Luchs and got

a block from Nick Svendsen to score his second touchdown.

Sean Breslin, John Christian, Steven Clapp, Mat Morris, Andrew

Hicks and Michael Lancaster led the Seahawks’ offensive line.

Helfrich, Hicks, Scott Frazier, Svendsen and J.D. Abbott, the team’s

Defensive Player of the Week, led the defense.

The Seahawks will play Long Beach in the first round of the

playoffs.

In Flag (6-year-olds) play:

* Mona Park Pathfinders 20, Newport 7:

Quest Truxton scored a 50-yard rushing touchdown to lead the

Seahawks.

Clint Henderson completed two passes with blocking from Trevor

Branca, Davis Hanscom, Will Eary, Chad Sheldon and Beau Roth. Branca

prevented a Pathfinder runner from scoring while Sheldon added a

10-yard sack. Michael Reese and Colin Brandenberger provided

additional defensive support.

Cole Collins ran in the extra-point conversion and Davis Hanscom

made his first appearance at running back.

Keaton Cablay and Henderson, along with running backs Alex

Schwarzenbach and Collins, gained valuable yardage.
