Looking for a way to invest your time and talent and make a
difference in our communities? Check out the next meeting of the
Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council, at which a dozen local
nonprofit organizations will share hands-on service opportunities for
congregations, service clubs, community groups and others at the
fourth annual Community Service Fair.
The event will be from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St.
Andrews Presbyterian Church. The public is invited to attend.
Groups participating include Habitat for Humanity, FISH-Harbor
Area, Share Our Selves, Families Forward, Adopt a Social Worker,
Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter, Alzheimer’s Assn. of Orange County
and Adult Day Services of Orange County, said Lane Calvert, vice
president of the council and a member of the Baha’i of Costa Mesa.
“This is a great opportunity to find out where your time and
talents can be used without any obligation on your part,” Calvert
said.
If you would like to come for the luncheon part of the meeting, it
costs $7.50 per person with reservation, $10 without a reservation.
To come only for the Community Service Faire, arrive by 12:30 p.m.
There is no charge.
To make reservations for the luncheon, call (949) 660-8665 or send
e-mail to [email protected] by 5 p.m. Tuesday. St. Andrews is at
600 St. Andrews Road, Newport Beach.
HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY
Corona del Mar High School will be hosting its fourth annual
Community Service Day on Monday. The assembly will begin at 11:10
a.m. in the big gym.
Peter Yarrow of Peter Paul and Mary will serve as the keynote
speaker and singer. Through his music and “Operation Respect”
curriculum, Yarrow encourages teachers, parents and youth to
collaborate in teaching respect and building caring and responsible
communities.
Yarrow and his daughter Bethany will receive the 2003 Peter Biehl
Memorial Peace Award, presented by Linda Biehl.
Linda Biehl and Peter Yarrow share a common bond. During college,
both of their daughters studied abroad in South Africa.
Bethany Yarrow filmed a documentary on the struggles of five South
African women. Biehl continues the work her daughter Amy started
before her murder 10 years ago, supporting programs that educate,
employ and empower the oppressed. Biehl travels around the world
sharing her message of peace, justice and reconciliation.
There will be more than 30 nonprofit organizations participating
in the community service fair after the assembly. The students will
have an opportunity to visit with representatives from the nonprofit
groups during lunch (12:35 to 1:10 p.m.) in the quad.

READ THE PILOT ON THE GO
I am often asked how one can read the Daily Pilot if you live
outside of Costa Mesa and Newport Beach or are out of the area on
vacation. Probably the easiest way is visit the Pilot on the Internet
at https://www. latimes.com/news/local/pilot.
You will be asked to set up a free Los Angeles Times account with
a password, and then, you can view the Pilot and most of its contents
every day. The other way is to subscribe at $30 a month, and it will
be mailed daily via first-class postage to you. For more information,
call (949) 642-4321.
