Marina poloists win Villa Park tourney

The Marina High boys’ water polo team won its 16th match in 17

outings this season and, in doing so, captured the Villa Park Classic

championship.

The Vikings won the 32-team tournament title on Saturday by taking

two matches.

First, they outscored host and No. 2 seed Villa Park, 12-8, in a

semifinal match. They then won the tournament with a 9-6 victory over

No. 4 seed Carlsbad in the final.

Marina previously edged defending classic champion, The Bishop’s

of La Jolla, in a tense quarterfinal match, 9-8. Michael Pacheco

scored in the final minutes to lift the Vikings, who were led by Rory

Kelly’s three goals.

Carlsbad and the Bishop’s are considered two of San Diego County’s

top teams.

Marina had reached the quarterfinal round with an 11-7 triumph

over Long Beach Millikan.

In consolation play of the same tournament, Taylor Budnick scored

five goals as Edison shaded Bell Gardens, 8-7, and Bill Meripol

netted three goals in Huntington Beach’s 8-6 loss to Mission Viejo.

The Oilers also fell to host Villa Park, 11-8, in earlier tournament action. Nick Sullivan scored four goals, and Meripol

posted three for the Oilers.

In girls’ volleyball, Ocean View made it four consecutive wins at

the outset of Golden West League play with a 25-11, 25-3, 25-10 win

over Westminster.

Kelsey Brown had 19 aces and 18 assists, and Jeniece Womack

finished with 11 kills to lead the Seahawks.

Huntington Beach came back from a 2-1 deficit in games to down El

Toro, 25-19, 18-25, 16-25, 25-5, 15-9, in nonleague play.

In girls’ golf, Jennie Lee shot an even-par 36 as Marina improved

to 2-0 in Sunset League play and 8-0 overall with a 223-339 win over

visiting Huntington Beach at Meadowlark Golf Course.
